I built this tool a year ago but I feel like Mastodon folks would like it

The "Weird Old Book Finder"

Type in a search query, and it'll find one randomly-chosen public-domain book that matches the query -- and present it for immediate reading: https://www.weirdoldbookfinder.net/

Why only one book? To prevent the paradox of choice! Just *start readin'*

Can't promise every book will be weird, but most are

A longer essay on how/why I developed it: https://debugger.medium.com/a-search-engine-that-finds-you-weird-old-books-3a74fbb5f3d4

This was a search for "mastodon"

Please feel free to listen in at 6pm EST (3 hours from now) for my talk about Ottobah Cugoano and the relationship between slavery and British national debt, live at Mount Holyoke College, or on Zoom (use QR code in the poster or DM me for the meeting ID). This is the first talk I've given on this project since my trip to the Bank of England archives in May.

Have you heard the story about Admiral Togo from #Japan and his #Welsh ginkgo tree? David James sat down with https://portspastpresent.eu/ and shared the fascinating tale behind #PembrokeDock’s ginkgo tree and its link with the creation of Japan’s modern navy.

Ports, Past and Present is a joint initiative with University College Cork (UCC) and Wexford County Council in Ireland, and in Wales with Aberystwyth University and the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. The project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Ireland Wales Cooperation programme and is led by UCC.

Ports, Past and Present

Still a newbie, but hoping to share things I find interesting.

This is the Diabolical pact with the Devil that was presented during the trial of French priest Urbain Grandier (1590-1634) to ‘prove’ him a witch. The text is in Latin but written back to front. As well as Satan, it contains the seals of several demons.

I've been researching malefic & diabolical magic recently for a project & it's just so interesting. What do you think of the symbols? #histodon #histodons #mastodon #introductions

To researchers’ surprise, Pulaski’s skeleton appeared to be female. It wasn’t a case of mistaken identity—the bones matched his age, height, and had the injuries he was known to have suffered. His DNA was compared to that of his grand-niece in 2019, confirming the bones belonged to Pulaski.

Was the Father of the American Cavalry a #trans man? We may never know, but it’s more likely he was born intersex, possibly with a condition like congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Happy Monday!

The best thing about Mondays is that it's the day I post new Unsung History episodes!

Today's episode, which will go up in a few hours, is about the intrepid Elsie Robinson, who not only wrote newspaper columns read by 20 million Americans but also worked in a gold mine for three years in the early 20th century! 😮

Go subscribe now on your favorite #podcast app so you get the episode as soon as it drops.

Figure of Elizabeth Carey, The Tanfield Tomb in St. John the Baptist church, Burford.
The tomb in St Katherine's Chapel caused controversy, because when Sir Lawrence died in 1625, his widow, Lady Tanfield, arranged for the tomb to be placed in the chapel one night, without the permission of the priests or town. The Tanfield's daughter, Elizabeth kneels at the head and their grandson, Lucius Cary, is shown at their feet.
