Friendly reminder to make sure your selected language is correct when posting on #Mastodon, this is especially critical now that servers can enable post translations for their users. If you regularly post in another language you can change your default posting language in your preferences!

Tips for journos trying out Mastodon.

Use the the #Introduction hashtag for your first #Mastodon post.‬

Then verify your profile and add link to your Twitter handle in the edit profile pane.

If you have a blog or other Web site where you can post HTML, the change is instant.

Instructions are on the page, you may need an IT admin to do this for your university or workplace site where you are published.

Am I the only one that's not a big fan of this fedified.com list of "notable Twitter users" going around? If you want your #Twitter followers to find you, add your #Mastodon link to your bio so they can use tools like https://pruvisto.org/debirdify, and if you want to verify your identity, verify yourself with your own website you control. Blindly following a central list of "elites" seems like the wrong move here, and part of the problem Twitter #verification perpetuated in the first place.

So it's been 1 week on Mastodon for me. Things I've learned so far:

Do an #introduction post, fill it with hashtags of interests.

Have something in your bio so people can read about you

Follow (& unfollow) liberally

#boost makes posts more visible to others, #favourite saves them to your favourites.

Use alt text on images

Use #bookmark to save threads you want to follow

#CW subjects like politics, sports or common triggers

Replying to yourself creates a #thread

#newbies #help #howto
