@atomicpoet There's danger in that potential purchase of a huge server, but there are mitigating factors too. If I understand correctly, the protocol itself and the code of Matodon is GPL which is a copy-left license. It means that no one can take the code, change it, and close it. All subsequent codes and changes have to be open. Capitalists are always weary of the GPL, because they can't actually own the code.

@littletranspunk I didn't realize they are hard to come by in other parts of the world. I live in Morocco and they are still sold in any phone store. A lot of people use them for work because they are cheap, hold charge for days, and can edure much harsher conditions than a smartphone.
