If you think it can’t happen here, remember that it already did. In 1942 soldiers came with rifles to our home and ordered us out. They put us in internment camps. Most of us were citizens.
@hobbyblogging
Mallorca?
@hobbyblogging
Daher in verschiedenen Posts.
@hobbyblogging
@hobbyblogging
Fazit: Schön, dass es Euch gefallen hat.
@hobbyblogging

@georgetakei
But NOBODY REMEMBERS!!!
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana, Historian, 1904
@HauntedGram1872_13 @georgetakei that quote is too old. noone remembers it ;)
@speckmantel @georgetakei I've always remembered it, and it's on one of my profile photo.

@HauntedGram1872_13 @georgetakei

Those who remember need to broadcast the memories.

Make it real for those who have no frame of reference.

@HauntedGram1872_13 @georgetakei Also, those of us who know their history are doomed to watch others repeat it anyway, no matter how loudly we yell at them not to.

Tweet from Blue Georgia 1d ago:
"People's rights are being abused,
people's rights are being violated... these are trial runs for what this administration will attempt to do to citizens."
- Pasadena Pastor Rev. Mark Chase on unidentified masked men in unmarked cars hauling away six people from a bus stop.

The tweet also includes a picture of the pastor, accompanied by two other religious persons, making his speech in Pasadena, CA.

@soliman @georgetakei
thanks for adding alt text!
i don‘t need captions, but many others do :)

@georgetakei
being from germany and knowing a bit or two about ‚our‘ history, it still freaks me out to read about madison square in 1939. or the internment camps for american citizens of japanese heritage …
learnt about that through the internet after i was grown up.

so, please:
WE fucked up. BIG TIME.
pls don‘t let history repeat itself. anywhere in the world.
please. 🫶

@speckmantel @georgetakei

We got this.

Churchill: You can always count on Americans to do the right thing. After they've tried everything else.

Trump is the last stop on the "everything else" line. I have faith my people will do the right thing.

Fucking finally. Been waiting my whole damn life for this.

@Uair @georgetakei i wish you, nay, all of us the best of luck!

a bit more of history lessons in school couldn‘t hurt though.

@speckmantel @Uair @georgetakei Your last sentence assumes that the folks learning from history want to avoid what happened — I’ve the growing/gnawing suspicion, in some cases the certainty, that some folks are learning from history, just with the opposite intention.

My conclusion is: it’s not a case of not knowing and therefore stumbling into a repeat of history — it’s intentional.

@DrWhoZee

I concluded that a long time ago. The people with the power treat history as a guide to what works. Santayana was an idiot.

Orwell thought he was writing a warning, but he was naive. He wrote the blueprint. Probably has more blood on his hands than Marx by now.

@Uair @DrWhoZee
I think another book would be the comparatively recent "Handmaid's Tale"
Frightening how many similarities there are to the Republic of Gilead.
Interesting that a map shows an area (roughly California) is shown as "Rebel Held"

@georgetakei

Heather Cox Richardson posted a video recently, where she talks exactly to this point.

Taking away the rights of the few is a stage of taking away rights for everyone.

Trans rights are human rights. In states that are in taking away parents ability to care for their children is an atrocity It is a crime against humanity and the most essential way.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @georgetakei
that‘s the one thing spock got wrong …
the lives of the many don‘t outweight the lives of the few.

that reasoning will just lead to a veeeery small group of many 🫣

@speckmantel @GhostOnTheHalfShell @georgetakei he didn't say lives.
He said needs. And he didn't say few, he said one.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.

I agree it can be a problematic statement in some cases, but it's more about not pandering to an individual when the many have more pressing needs. It's about not being selfish and considering the collective.

@georgetakei

these are purges. Enough of them, and people will either revolt, of turn in their own neighbours.

@georgetakei When Fred Trump Sr. should've been ordered out in WWII he falsely claimed his family originated from Karlstad in Sweden, not from Kallstadt in Germany.
@ArenaCops @georgetakei Fred Trump senior, born in Kallstadt, Germany died in 1918. Fred Trump, Donald’s father, was born a US citizen and like tens of thousands of Americans with German ancestry, dissociated themselves with the old country, by making false claims. He was far from unique. The US interned German and Italian nationals just like they did the Japanese.

@georgetakei

#JDVance &the #GOP are using genocidal rhetoric about Democrats& progressives & arresting #Democratic elected officials

You have a platform to inform people. Please keep speaking out!

@georgetakei I also don't think we're in the stage of "it's about to happen again", we 're in the stage of it's happening again, right now. The concentration camps with immigrants of all statuses are in distributed locations. At sites refusing oversight or plain visits from congressional reps.
@georgetakei Maybe it's good privileged people, senators and mayors experience the treatment poor people in America receive daily. Why Public Enemy and other groups came to being. Why people that live in countries with unmarked black vans fear for their lives an trek to the US. There are not enough people speaking out on this horrible, abusive experience.
@georgetakei I'm finding your account of it here really informative and moving https://www.webtoons.com/en/graphic-novel/they-called-us-enemy/list?title_no=7685
They Called Us Enemy

George Takei has captured hearts and minds worldwide with his captivating stage presence and outspoken commitment to equal rights. But long before he braved new frontiers in Star Trek, he woke up as a four-year-old boy to find his own birth country at war with his father's—and their entire family forced from their home into an uncertain future. In a stunning graphic memoir, Takei revisits his haunting childhood in American concentration camps, as one of over 100,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned by the U.S. government during World War II. Experience the forces that shaped an American icon—and America itself—in this gripping tale of courage, country, loyalty, and love.

@georgetakei we fought a global war ostensibly to prevent exactly this kind of thing from taking place. We signed a treaty and created conventions to prevent further occurrences.

And now we are forgetting the horrors of our own, living, history.

These are truly dark times.
