I live in New York. I get paid to write about databases. I don’t get paid to write about other stuff, but I do it anyway.

Tech writer at Google; Co-founder of IFTF, an interactive-fiction nonprofit; Liker of coffee, cats, open web technologies, et cetera.

I pronounce it [MACK in tawsh].

I'm going to make good on my "Plan A" to relocate to a smaller Mastodon server, soon as I found a fitting one. Let's try masto.nyc, an #NYC-regional server run by @seano. I'm very interested in the idea of an instance pinned to a city like this, and I can't resist seeing what it feels like.

This isn't necessarily my "forever home"; I still have my eye on certain colleagues with Fediverse plans. But for today, I'm gonna pull some levers and see what happens.

See y'all across the Hudson!

Hey #VideoGames Mastodon, what short video games should we be checking out? The shorter the better.
Kid just built this in the MoMA sculpture garden and I’ve seen like 10 tourists take photos of it
#Covid day two: Feverish, sleepy, coughy-sneezy, but breathing easy. Was able to get out and fast-walk around Central Park before crawling back into bed again. All hail the vax.

Working my way through my parents #SlideCollection from the #60s and #70s.

Yeah, so my bullshit detector turned out to be accurate.

I'm always leery of social media fairy-tales and this one felt *especially* like wishcasting. But I find myself particularly annoyed at some of the Extremely Online influencers who click-harvested off of this.

This is why our information ecosystem is filled with raw sewage, folks.

Romanian Cops Did Not Find Andrew Tate Because Of His Greta Thunberg Video

This is a lesson in media failure and misinformation.

Mystery solved by @jacksonmead! Gino was either the brother of Papa Gino's founder, or its co-founder, depending on whose obituary you believe.

"Jesus Loves, Gino Lives" is an excellent life slogan. I read it as "Go to Jesus if you want your soul saved; come to me if you wanna be fed." 🍕

@[email protected] https://eastietimes.com/2020/09/15/michael-valerio-former-eastie-resident-papa-ginos-founder-at-89/ "By 1961, Valerio and Helen changed the name of the small take out pizza operation to Piece O’ Pizza and later to Papa Gino’s in 1967 in honor of his brother." And here's Gino's obit: http://cartwrightfuneral.com/viewObit.php?id=5307

While we're all talking about #pizza, what's the verdict on whether Papa Gino's, the ubiquitous pizzeria chain of my Eastern Massachusetts childhood, is named after Papageno, lovelorn fursuiter and baritone?

Wikipedia has no satisfying origin for the pizza shop's name; a cursory internet search shows no connection. I refuse to let it go. I long to know like Papageno yearns to find a Papagena to share his degenerate lifestyle with.

I call upon #Mozart Mastodon to solve this while I sleep. Bless

Hey architecture & history friends, anyone recognize this location? The building is not the Brooklyn Museum, as I thought on first glance. My grandmother, Anna Heifetz Youner, around the mid-20s, likely NYC, Manhattan or Brooklyn. Thanks for any corroborating building photos

These thoughts brought to you by literal #Covid fever-dreams three nights after seeing the Met production of The Magic Flute. My night featured hours of hallucinations about my day job, followed by sudden and real clarity about this strange little opera, which apparently I'd been turning around in my mind as a background process for days. So that's a silver lining, eh.
