bombers used mechanical computers to perform trajectory calcs. Curiously, these computers (box w gears & cogs) performed better when on the aircraft than on the ground. the vibration from the aircraft reduced errors from sticky parts. Instead of moving in jerks, they moved continuously. vibrating motors were built into them, and their vibration was called dither. When you tap a mechanical meter, u are applying dither.
