So Maastricht is taking Flanders to court, because Flanders refuses to build the promised Hasselt-Maastricht tram line, and Maastricht had sent Flanders €19.6m for this, and this so far has not been paid back... https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2023/11/21/maastricht-daagt-vlaanderen-voor-rechter/

It's not going to get the #CrossBorderRail line built though, sadly… Link via @maartje

Emerging Europe has a really good write up of my conversation with Craig Turp-Balazs about central Europe's #CrossBorderRail problems, and what to do to solve them. Rail connections to Ukraine get a mention too https://emerging-europe.com/news/connecting-europe-by-train-its-time-to-start-making-the-right-political-decisions/
Connecting Europe by train: It's time to start making the right political decisions

Many of the problems facing Europe’s cross-border railways can be put right with simple, relatively cheap solutions, says campaigner Jon Worth. ‘We know how to do this, it’s just a question of making good political decisions.’

@OrionKidder *Give* someone housing, and you'll house them indefinitely and solve homelessness. *Teach* someone to get their own housing, and you'll accomplish nothing as all the structural and economic barriers to affordable housing will remain unchanged, but at least you'll have created jobs for Ivy-league grads who want to work at a non-profit to burnish their law school applications.

Why do you have to be this way, Camptosaurus?

Most dinosaurs are elegant animals. Tyrannosaurs are elegant biting machines. Chasmosaurs are elegent. Brachiosaurs are hella elegant. Even ankylosaurs have their own robust elegance. And then there's Camptosaurus. Why do you have to be so lumpen? What's your head doing down there? What the heck are your ilia doing up there? What are they even supposed to be, TV aerials?

It's probably premature and possibly inaccurate to credit Lukashenko with averting a bloody disaster on the streets of Moscow today, but that it's even remotely what apparently happened is fucking incredible.

“People who criticize new technologies are sometimes called Luddites, but it’s helpful to clarify what the Luddites actually wanted. The main thing they were protesting was the fact that their wages were falling at the same time that factory owners’ profits were increasing, along with food prices. They were also protesting unsafe working conditions, the use of child labor, and the sale of shoddy goods that discredited the entire textile industry. The Luddites did not indiscriminately destroy machines; if a machine’s owner paid his workers well, they left it alone. The Luddites were not anti-technology; what they wanted was economic justice. They destroyed machinery as a way to get factory owners’ attention. The fact that the word #Luddite is now used as an insult, a way of calling someone irrational and ignorant, is a result of a smear campaign by the forces of capital.”

In case you haven't heard, Red Hat is laying off people today, and I'm one of them. My 'career' as a Hatter lasted just over 15 months, much less time than I had planned or expected.

Many of you know me well, and know that I have extensive background in open source software, project management, open source business, and lots of related activities. If you're aware of any opportunities which may be of interest, feel free to send them my way via any channel you like.

Boosts much appreciated, of course, and thanks in advance!

Carlson gets an invite to move to Russia from a top Kremlin propagandist (who, btw, has appeared in Wagner PMC recruitment videos): "We'll happily offer you a job," the oligarch, Vladimir Solovyov, said.
