Durov claims that Telegram usage in Russia is stable thanks to VPNs, even as the authorities have neared a 100% block. But users need to worry about their own (Russian) apps snitching on them.

🔐 We’ve upgraded Telegram’s anti-censorship protocol. Users in Russia are advised to update their apps to stay connected despite the ban.
⚠️ Some other advice: stock up on several VPNs/proxies in advance, help your friends and family do the same, and avoid using Russian apps while connected to a VPN (they may report your VPN to authorities for blocking).
💪 I’m glad to see most people are already doing this. Thanks to this Digital Resistance, Telegram usage in Russia has remained stable over the past week despite the full ban.
🔥 Keep it up. On our side, we’ll continue improving Telegram’s decentralized anti-censorship tech.
TelegramA new study shows that some of the most-used Android apps in Russia — including all four major banks tested — are checking whether clients are using VPNs, and 18 out of 30 are sending that data back to company servers.

Meduza's newsletter has been missing in action for the last week as we work on some big changes to its foundation, but I did manage yesterday to write this breakdown of a recent report by Elizaveta Antonova on the Zelensky admin's machinations involving Kyrylo Budanov and future elections.

Zelensky made Kyrylo Budanov a political force — and now no one in the president’s circle is sure what he’ll do with it
MeduzaElizaveta Antonova recently reported on machinations within the Zelensky admin to elevate spy chief Kyrylo Budanov and use him to counterbalance the political challenge posed by former commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi. Elections are still nowhere to be seen, but the games have begun.

MeduzaAnother informative and entertaining podcast episode from Jonny Tickle, Jeremy Morris, and James Pearce — at least for a sicko like me who tried his hand at and quit Russia-focused academia.

Western Academia on Russia in 2026: War, Academia and Activism
This week on Russia Unfiltered, Jonny Tickle, Jeremy Morris and James Pearce take a closer look at the state of Russia-focused academia in the West. With Jeremy heading to the annual British Association for Slavic and Eastern European Studies (BASEES) conference, we use the moment to ask a bigger question: what has happened to the field since 2022? Four years into the war, access to Russia is limited, funding has shifted, and the balance between research and public commentary is changing. We discuss whether the discipline is now dominated by war-related topics, how trends like decolonisation and Ukrainian studies are reshaping the landscape, and what gets lost when fieldwork becomes difficult or impossible. The conversation also turns to the realities of academic conferences, who gets to attend, who gets excluded, and whether these spaces still reflect genuine scholarship or something closer to advocacy.Along the way, we explore how research trends move in cycles, from Soviet everyday life to cultural history, and why some of the most interesting work today is happening far away from headline politics. This podcast is an independent project and does not represent the views of our employers or affiliated institutions.

«Агентство»Quite stark comments from Zelensky on the repercussions of surrendering the rest of the Donbas. He speaks quite openly about the potential for losing the army's support and the economy crashing. I wonder how this tweet will look on the day Russia eventually captures the region completely.
