@socrates Perhaps you've already considered this and have a good reason not to do it but just in case... I've seen some other instances that seem to have enabled a feature that allows their members to send invitations to other people to join the instance. Would that offload some of the work involved in distinguishing spam sign-ups while also enabling the community to grow with its existing culture?
My son requested his toast, raw, for breakfast this morning.

Dear journalism studies researchers, instructors, and graduate students:

With thanks to @konrad for the idea, I have created a Google form to populate a directory of those of us who are on Mastodon. I describe "journalism studies" as ICA does: those into journalism theory, research, and education.

I will monitor the list for any problematic content. Contact me with any comments.

Journalism Studies Scholars on Mastodon

Dear All, To help journalism studies researchers, instructors, and graduate students find each on Mastodon, consider adding yourself to this list that will I post on Mastodon and will be openly available online. Contact me on Mastodon (@[email protected]) if you have any questions. I will do my best to monitor this list for any inappropriate material. Note that I am defining "journalism studies" in this instance as the study of or interest in "journalism theory, journalism research, and professional education," as taken directly from the mission statement of the Journalism Studies division of the International Communication Association. for those I haven't met yet, hi, I'm Tessa! i develop/maintain open source software for libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage folks. these days I work on open source web archiving software for all at Webrecorder. previously I was a software dev working on Archivematica and AtoM at Artefactual, and before that I was a digipres librarian and digital archivist a few places.

outside of work I play music (mostly doom metal these days) and ttrpgs, do archery, and hang with my pets :)

@actualham One tool that helps you identify instances to use is https://instances.social/ however, it has lot listed and can be a bit unwieldy to search through. Also, it includes many sites that you might not want to spend time with. However, it can be useful to get a sense of what is out there. You might also consider sites like glammr.us, fediscience.org, idf.social, and scicomm.xyz, which are scholarly-related but I don't know what their policies are so can't say if it's what you're seeking.

@bgcarlisle ah, hate when that happens. Also I'd like to take this opportunity to go on record with the claim that a good Spartan apple is better than a Honeycrisp.

Of course we're open to having new friends join us, but with what's going on over at Twitter, the number of people trying to join is high enough that I honestly can't tell the spam signups from the legit ones, so we've gone invite-only

If you want to join Scholar, and you understand what kind of space you're joining and want to be a part of that

Reach out to me and I'll give you an invitation to join

Double dipping is not only an issue when it comes to nachos but even more when we’re talking about access to scientific knowledge

@glynmoody explains why

Open access is taking over, but academic institutions are paying as much money as ever: what happened?

The good news is that open access publishing, which allows anyone to read academic papers without needing a subscription, is taking over. The bad news is that academic publishers have managed to subvert it, so the victory is proving hollow. That’s confirmed by a new preprint from an international group of researchers: Since the early …

@thunderbird Owl to connect with Exchange (forced by workplace requirement). It'd be great for Exchange mail, calendar, contacts and MFA to be integrated.
Here's some background on a project my colleagues and I made for #OpenAccessWeek2022 -- we wanted to help people see that sources of #OpenAccess research can answer all kinds of questions (in this case, related to the climate crisis). https://chroknowlogy.ca/intellectual-liberty/2022/talk-broad-value-open-access/
