Another banger by Ted Chiang on "AI":

"Employing philosophers might endow LLM companies with an air of respectability that slot-machine makers don’t get from the behavioral psychologists they hire, but in both cases the companies are preying on people’s tendency to see something that’s not there."

No, Artificial Intelligence Is Not Conscious

Taken to its logical conclusion, this line of thinking is absurd—and damning.

I recently created a very simple #website for a friend. It's just plain #html, #css and #javascript but I didn't want to overcomplicate it. Constructive criticism is welcome as it was also a revision/learning project for me.

If anyone is interested in custom #guitars in the area of #lyon or #saintetienne feel free to check it out.

I noticed that since I have #mastodon I often think about posting something but then have a long internal discussion if that is even interesting or if it isn't just easier to use search or #AI rather than asking real people.

It's similar to my parents asking random people on the street for directions while having all the necessary info on the phone. It always seems like they will bother people but in the end it is always a very pleasant exchange for both sides.

While the following text has been circulating already (thanks to @fcambus, @joel, @daftaupe & @grahamperrin amongst others), I figured it was time to publish it myself, with a couple edited notes following feedback from fellow Linux & *BSD enthusiasts alike: https://club.unix.rocks/commentary/under-linux/

Putting together ideas for a follow-up piece, very open to constructive criticism, pushback or enthusiasm! 🤓

What are some ways to improve your home feed?

I started following some hashtags but now my feed is full of bot posts, big site articles, other languages etc. The signal-to-noise ratio really declined.

Do I just replace my hashtag follows with more specific tags or hide every bot account? I found the language filter settings but they only apply to public timelines. Are carefully designed filters the answer?

When you look at this graph, remember that the UN WFP reckon with just $40Bn a year, they can end world hunger by 2030.

Mind bogglingly large amounts are being spent on sparkling autocarrot, with massive increases in GHG emissions, horrendous impacts on water systems. And yet. For a fraction of the price we could literally feed the world.

Imagine waking up and thinking the world needs more AI, when you have the capital to just feed everyone, and still be stupendously rich.

"Young" and motivated digital humanities learner here: would you recommend #github or #codeberg to start building projects and a portfolio?

Curious about both the practical and ethical sides of the choice.
