Buy books. But not from Amazon. Buy them from Bookshop.org, the independent site. This move by Amazon is shameful.

Here is a link to my book on Bookshop.org.

Passive ad/scam/phishing accounts are so strange to me. By passive, I mean their only interaction is to follow someone and hope that person visits their profile.

I call they types Bottom Scams. No messages, only πŸ₯Ίβ πŸ‘‰β πŸ‘ˆ

I think I want to be in more queer instance, nothing wrong with this I just want instance more catered to queers. I sent request to lgbtqia.space idk just to let you know if someone cares about me

@petergleick

Psychopaths gonna psychopath.

@petergleick I had already gone back to buying physical books from local bookshops and this only reinforces my desire to to continue doing so. Forget β€œconvenience.” Not worth enabling a monopoly.

@petergleick

In Germany you may buy local or if there is no local book shop I can recommend: https://www.buch7.de/

@petergleick

I decided to boycott Amazon long before even thinking about doing business with them ...

And knowing their mistreatment of workers and suppliers I don't understand why anybody would want to do business with them ...

@petergleick

Why I haven't used #Amazon since about 2005 (other than the so far unvoidable AWS with its ubiquitous web presence)

And, FWIW, businesses not using AWS for hosting, etc. is an important message to Bezos about unacceptable business practices.

@petergleick Oh cool, thanks for sharing this, I prefer digital books but don't really read much right now cuz I haven't found an alternative for Google Books. πŸ˜₯Thankfully I never bought into Kindle, but hearing about alternatives like this really helps!

@petergleick

Next, Amazon will trademark "book"

@petergleick I buy a lot of books from Bookshop.org for my writing class. When I am done with them I donate them to my local bookstore to help keep them afloat. One of my very few good deeds.
@petergleick
This last year I figured out that Amazon prints cheap paperback books on demand when ordered.
@Okanogen @petergleick print-on-demand (POD) is the standard model for self-published books, low-circulation books, and books that sell beyond their original print run. This is regardless of whether they're sold through Amazon.

There are several companies that provide this service to authors, including Ingram Spark, Draft2Digital, One Bookshelf... A lot of the books are easily available to indy bookshops through their usual wholesalers.

I don't think it's at all well known outside of publishing circles, though.

@jetlagjen

Okay, there truly are only two actual printing services for the US for self-publishers:

Amazon and Ingram Spark.

Draft2Digital use Ingram Spark, and their interface is so bad you can't even get a direct link to your print book.

For the EU, there is Amazon and a handful of other direct printers which - sadly - are all mostly unusable (Tredition might be an exception but is expensive).

Lulu is not a serious option anywhere, they are expensive and bad.

@Okanogen @petergleick

@petergleick I get my audiobooks from https://Libro.fm - just like Audible, but DRM free!
Buy audiobooks & support local bookstores

Libro.fm makes it possible for you to buy audiobooks directly through local bookstores.

Libro.fm
@johnoestmannmusic @petergleick I've heard that libro's audio quality is quite bad.
@yee @petergleick I've been using it for months, and there is nothing wrong with the audio.
You can listen to the samples on book pages before you buy to check
@petergleick LOL Amazon thinks it's a bookshop.

@petergleick

Please visit your local friendly neighborhood bookshop. Usually staffed by fellow book nerds happy to help you find just the right book(s).

If your local to the Bay Area find your nearest Books Inc: https://booksinc.net/

@petergleick Just when I thought Amazon couldn't get any sleazier.

Just kidding: I know they have plenty of sleaze left to dig into.

@petergleick Just put your book on my bookshop.org wishlist
@petergleick Worth adding, for those not already aware, that Bookshop.org lets you contribute part of your purchase to a local bookshop of your choice, and that they've recently started selling eBooks as well. And the digital sales can support local shops too!

@petergleick

Yes, Bookshop.org sells e-books now too!

@officerripley @petergleick but can you gift them? That was the big showstopper for me, I need to gift a lot of digital books

@codinghorror @petergleick

I just checked their site and unfortunately, no, it's not possible to gift ebooks at this time. Maybe they'll add that later.

@officerripley @petergleick I just mailed them offering to partially fund the feature

@codinghorror @petergleick

Cool! It would be so great to never have to use Amuhzon again. :-)

@petergleick I only buy from Bookshop. I’m doing everything I can to distance myself from these 21st Century robber-barons.
@petergleick I love this but I wish it could deliver digital copies effectively.. is there a way?

@codinghorror @petergleick they do sell ebooks

https://bookshop.org/info/ebooks

(But most have drm so have to be read on the web or in their apps though they are working to get them into Kobo apps and devices) they also aren’t for sale in their apps due to Apple and Google taking a 30% cut of digital sales inside of apps.

(I haven’t bought any ebooks from them but it’s good that they offer it. Some indie bookstores also sell ebooks via Kobo and audiobooks via Libro.fm

See https://www.indiebound.org/ebooks

@petergleick This site is not available in #Canada, FYI.
@mirijb2 @petergleick It's not? Seems to work for me. Or is it that you can't buy things from it?
@opiate @petergleick you can't buy from it. Sorry I was not clear.
@petergleick crazy idea, but almost everywhere, but in the US there's a book price bind that forces everyone to sell any book at the price set by the publisher in order to eliminate the price competition between local bookshops and massive chains or online only retailers.
Most countries seem to agree that books ares cultural heritage rather than a commercial product.
@petergleick In Germany There is this get-together-Website of small bookshops you can Order Books www.genialokal.de a wordplay with Genius and local.
Buy local, Think global, be genius 😎

@petergleick Glad to say, I've bought nothing from Amazon since Bezos bent the knee in November 2024. The occasional few cents price difference is more than worth cutting off the oligarch.

#boycottAmazon #boycottOligarchy

@petergleick It’s only a shame that the Bookshop app is so horribly crippled.
@petergleick does anyone know of a Canadian equivalent to this website?

@ingalls @petergleick
This is a searchable listing of Canadian independent bookstores. πŸ“š

@petergleick that's really sad. Also consider supporting libro.fm, they're a great audiobook store
@petergleick not available in Canada?
@petergleick Book marked it. Thank you

@petergleick
N.B. when you choose a local store to support, as I prefer when shopping Bookshop.org, that preference is a cookie instead of an account setting. If you clear cookies or take other privacy precautions this preference gets lost.

I had an email exchange a couple years ago with their marketing team asking them to make it to an account preference. Alas they have't thus far.

Still better than Amazon.

@petergleick see also thriftbooks and alibris!
@petergleick hey am from India and I can't access this site.
@petergleick We use The Nile and Booktopia downunder. Good alternatives.
@petergleick Ordered a bunch online from Bookshop tonight. Hitting bookstores in person tomorrow. Amazon can suck my dick. There. Is THAT good enough for you? I've already acted. What about YOU, sir?

@petergleick

better still, go find an actual book store in your town, or, use the library, or find second hand bookstore. Support local

@petergleick

I've stopped buying anything from Amazon.

@petergleick I want to like bookshop.org. But their e-books are, as a practical matter, worse than Kindle, Kobo, Nook, or even Google Play e-books. They've got DRM that I can't readily remove, can't be read outside their app (eg, on most e-ink readers), and yet does not give me any of the utility of "right of first sale".

@acdingman @petergleick calibre can't remove their DRM?

I don't buy music that isn't loss-less (flac) and I don't buy ebooks that don't come in a standard format (epub).

@nevomagnezi @petergleick not as far as I've seen on the appropriate plug-in forum threads or repos. I'm not above buying something that has DRM I know I can remove to get an unencumbered epub, but they don't seem to use any of the known schemes.
@petergleick Adding a link to the UK equivalent, Hive, & an independent bookshop that I like to support:
https://www.hive.co.uk/Shops/Between-the-Lines-Great-Bardfield
- but if you can visit in person you will find additional books not available online, such as the new 'History of Great Bardfield' (with a chapter on its #14thCentury prosperity due to the #LadyOfClare). From personal experience, great conversations may ensue!
#IndieBookshop #bookshop @bookstodon
@petergleick Just stop buying from Amazon in general!
And I shouldn't need to point out why!
