Everything doesn't have to be awful. I really believe that. 🇿🇦🇺🇦🐧

Desperate refugees are willing to work for scraps and live in appalling conditions because they know how bad things can get

This may seem unusual because poor people in South Africa live in appalling conditions already, but they are heavily protected under expansive labour laws. Illegal immigrants are not.

When you add in our 30% unemployment rate it shows that the anger in developed countries over immigration pales in comparison to what is brewing here in #southafrica

Something awful might happen on Tuesday in #southafrica

It is an extreme version of what is happening in developed countries, where #immigrants are being scapegoated for social ills.

But what's going on here? #Neoliberalism is to blame. The neoliberal realpolitik is that normal relations and trade with autocracies will inevitably turn them into #liberal #democracy.

What really happens is autocrats enrich themselves, destroy their countries and cause refugee crises

How South Africa’s xenophobic online machine was rebooted in 2026

Recent events did not create SA’s xenophobic online machine. They reveal how entrenched, interconnected and politically influential that machine has already become.

@spdrnl I won't pretend to speak for other countries because South Africa also does in person voting, but I agree.

It also makes voting a more tangible exercise.

@donni it really grinds my joints

@cynblogger luckily I think there are truths that most of us can recognize, like the fact that we're all struggling to cope with the present.

Maybe that can be a starting point?

@spdrnl I don't understand the connection. Can you please elaborate?

Arguments like this rely on what is evident and obvious as being the argument. The sceptic then has to show a valid objection.

We can pull people back from the precipice of nonsensical unreality by forcing them to look and then deny what they see rationally. This forces them to think and use that algorithmically scrambled brain.

Our best chance is getting a moment of clarity every now and then. We are planting seeds on hard ground. We only need a few to grow however

This might seem impossible, but radical scepticism is not new. We can use our eyes to see reality. G.E. Moore made the argument very well.

Here is one hand.

Here is another hand.

Therefore, external objects (the physical world) exist. [1]

The mechanism of this argument seems ridiculous until you realise its mechanics. Another example:

1. Extending your hand out from your chest into the air with a flat palm is a fascist salute
2. That's what Musk did
3. Therefore musk did a fascist salute.

The reason we struggle to see #war , #fascism and #totalitarianism in this time period is because we have moved firmly into the post modern age.

#Russia using disinformation to change electoral outcomes in foreign countries does not look like war.

Red trucker caps don't look like fascism.

Doorbell cameras don't look like totalitarianism.

Our shared reality has collapsed, and with that our shared values and goals.

We will have to find ways to re-establish a common reality.
