Ok, I could ask actual people I know, but I'll throw this out here instead.

I know there is a great scene-setting piece out there that I can use for week 1 of my cultural heritage unit, but cannot find it or remember the details.

- Under 20 pages
- Summarises the history of Western collecting institutions
- Opens up good first week (therefore also get to know you) conversations about why those institutions / collections / etc can be problematic.

Whatcha all got for me?

New article alert, and it's even published fully open access thanks to a nifty agreement our library has with the publisher.

I do a deep dive into the earliest comprehensive European survey of the land around timtumili minanya – the Derwent River in lutruwita (Tasmania). This map was deeply influential on the shape the southern colony would take, but it was never (as far as I have been able to tell) copied in full or taken beyond the island. It is a curiosity, but more than that, it is a reminder of the importance of the most innocuous-looking documents.

@Daveosaurus @footsteps I've told my student to see if the Anna Scott in the records matches the other details she has about this person (there is another letter but it only calls her 'Anna'), we'll see where she gets with that.
@footsteps Looking at the list of likely convicts in the colony at the time, it could be Scott...
@moncur_d How would you feel about Scott?

Ok Family Historians and Handwriting Nerds, what do we think someone's name here is?

...case of my female assigned servant Anna ???? ....

@FaithfullJohn Oh right! Yes, sorry, I thought you meant you had a map as your phone screen image and I wanted to know which one 😁 I love the little set of estate maps and the LiDAR they have in there. Makes the hours fly by.

I went to an excellent session a few years ago by the map curator where he talked us through the software they use, it was quite remarkable.

@FaithfullJohn I'm not sure your link has gone to a specific map? I can see all the One-Inch Ordnance Survey coverage of the UK?
