Your periodic reminder (as if you needed one) that mid-1st millennium Roman (ā€œByzantineā€) engineering will never not be impressive. Hagia Sofia, Basilica Cistern. Bonus photo of cat inside Hagia Sofia.

Friends on FB started asking why is the feed full or complete junk (ads and communities that they didn’t subscribe to). I proselytized ā€œenshittificationā€ (1) and of course @Catvalente ā€˜s timeless ā€œstart buying thingsā€ article (2). But I don’t think they’ll move to Mastodon, and where else to move? Sigh

Always boost/repost animal cognition breakthroughs, especially cephalopods!

Thiago Carvalho (@[email protected])

"Cephalopod cognition also considerably widens the evolutionary gamut of intelligence, showing that it can evolve without a vertebrate Bauplan — without an internal skeleton or skull or vertebrate brain architecture. An intelligent animal so radically different from us somehow makes our place in evolution seem a little less special. To us, oh so sapient, humans, cephalopods are a distant mirror, one that may reflect — and deflect — some explanations for the evolution of intelligence generally." https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(23)01302-7

Here are some photos from the exhibit - the text of the poem is amazing intricate (pretty small tablet). And the rolling imprint art is pretty cool to see in person - some neat scenes and so well done

Morgan Library in NYC has an exhibit ā€œShe Who Wrote: Enheduanna and Women of Mesopotamiaā€ focused on Enheduanna - the first recorded named author in history (it’s a woman), whom I discovered through @MariaDahvana (thank you!) on the davidnaimon’s podcast. Should be interesting

She Who Wrote: Enheduanna and Women of Mesopotamia, ca. 3400-2000 B.C. brings together for the first time a comprehensive selection of artworks that capture rich and shifting expressions of women’s lives in ancient Mesopotamia during the 3rd millennium B.C.

Given that it’s all #public posts (keep in mind that even @ ā€œmessagesā€ aren’t private here at all), even with auto-delete messages (which I like), this will never feel ā€œprivateā€ like my chat groups with irl friends.

Is it right to assume that for the ā€œfriend groupā€ feeling I’d need discord, or something along those lines?

3-week impressions on #mastodon

Long-term twitter addict here. I got excited for idea of something smaller, with community. Imagined I could make some closer online friends (that I read about other people making)

But it’s still mostly twitter-like, with the main feed a jumble of all of my possible interests (which I feel promotes #addiction), and a kind-of ā€œshout into the voidā€ feeling (not that it’s bad, and I *like* async comm in theory) but still largely performative?

Just here to say that the #KennedySpaceCenter is impressive - great immersive presentation for the #SpaceShuttle and definitely for the #Apollo program.

But most importantly we confirmed that the new #OrionCapsule for the #Artemis program will have a lavatory! #PoopingInSpace
