@cstross and yet - how do we get all the good prople from Bluesky here or somewhere else? Bluesky is just a tiny company some dick or another could buy and destroy it in a flash
Your periodic reminder (as if you needed one) that mid-1st millennium Roman (ā€œByzantineā€) engineering will never not be impressive. Hagia Sofia, Basilica Cistern. Bonus photo of cat inside Hagia Sofia.

Friends on FB started asking why is the feed full or complete junk (ads and communities that they didn’t subscribe to). I proselytized ā€œenshittificationā€ (1) and of course @Catvalente ā€˜s timeless ā€œstart buying thingsā€ article (2). But I don’t think they’ll move to Mastodon, and where else to move? Sigh

Always boost/repost animal cognition breakthroughs, especially cephalopods!

Thiago Carvalho (@[email protected])

"Cephalopod cognition also considerably widens the evolutionary gamut of intelligence, showing that it can evolve without a vertebrate Bauplan — without an internal skeleton or skull or vertebrate brain architecture. An intelligent animal so radically different from us somehow makes our place in evolution seem a little less special. To us, oh so sapient, humans, cephalopods are a distant mirror, one that may reflect — and deflect — some explanations for the evolution of intelligence generally." https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(23)01302-7

@ghoulpus @effies @drawnonglass don’t know who it’s relevant for but Eddie/Suzy is on tour in the next month, including NYC and a bunch other places

@XanIndigo methinks we should hijack this and convert them to hoots. Let’s start a new fedinetwork if we have to - the owlwork? The owlork?

Also, Ents and their moots

@ClimateHuman totally agree. I was just reading/listening to #LeGuin’s ā€œNo Time to Spareā€ (essay collection) and she mentioned how Harvard, when asking about key things to help future generations, asked to rate the impact of ā€œContinued Growth and Stabilityā€ (for the US). She called it ā€œa typical example of capitalist thinking, or non-thinkingā€ and wrote in the margins ā€œyou can’t have both!ā€
@darius @mart0 can confirm! worked well for me, despite 0 sysadmin experience in last 10+ years
@GripTheFox @johannthors @bookstodon just started book one of the Hrimland series - Shadow of the Short Days. Slightly gritty and intriguing so far
