@rcorless Within Europe, a pleasant train trip lasting less than a day takes you just about anywhere. There are also a number of night trains. From a central location like Zurich, pretty much all of Europe is within a day’s train ride away. Even London-Barcelona is well under 12 hours. And while on the train, the fleeting feeling of the moment, the respectful privacy of being among strangers, and the calm, make for interesting hours of dedicated work and deep thought—a great day at the, so to speak, office.

As the "bike friend" in my friend group, I frequently get asked "what kind of bike should I buy?" - so much so that I have compiled my thoughts into a google doc. I figure I should share it with you all; I bet some of you get asked the same question! #BikeTooter #Cycling #BikeCommuter

I figured this would be a good way to provide more information (hopefully with illustrations!) ...

Mathematical Models of Evolutionary Rescue

IMPORTANT DATES Registration deadline: 1 March, 2023 Symposium: 5-8 June, 2023 The symposium starts on June 5 at 5pm and ends on June 8 in the evening. OVERVIEW Evolution can rescue populations from extinction. In conservation this is desired, in medicine it is often not. There has now been nearly 30 years of research under the banner of “evolutionary rescue”. A substantial proportion of this has been mathematical modelling. This theory has expanded from deterministic 1-locus and phenotypic...

A HS student to their TX school board, which is banning books:

“I’m not going to sit here and talk about the slippery slope that book banning leads to because I learned from a book, that I checked out from my school’s library, that I don’t need to resort to logical fallacy to make a point. I’m simply going to say that no government – and public school is an extension of government – has ever banned books, and banned information from its public, and been remembered in history as the good guys.”

Elusive glass octopus spotted in the remote Pacific Ocean. Only its eyes, optic nerve and digestive tract are opaque. This rarely-seen glass octopus bared all recently — even a view of its innards — when an underwater robot filmed it gracefully soaring through the deep waters of the Central Pacific Ocean. Hey everyone how about we use #evolgen_paper for toots on evolutionary genetics papers/preprints. Unless someone has another hashtag already in wide use.

That way we could all follow along regardless of day/timezone.
