1/2 We biked in to First Presbyterian Church in Monterey today for the ordination ceremony for Cory Pina, Curator for Spiritual Life at All Saints Day School in Carmel Valley. Cory has volunteered many hours to boost Bicycling Monterey’s WordPress skills.

A big highlight of today’s ride came from our swinging by #CaliRoots to see how packed the bike valet station was today (surprise—not full at all). But the joy of that stop was meeting Carlos (pictured), who was doing Cali Roots volunteering nearby. He does road and mountain biking and is a bike-to-work commuter, using the Monterey-Salinas Transit bike-and-ride option to get to work from his Soledad home. We had a great chat about e-bikes, e-motos, and more, and we hope to rope this cool guy in as a bike advocacy voice for Salinas Valley residents, e.g., on TAMC’s bike-ped committee. https://bikemonterey.org/monthly-meetings-tamc-bicycle-pedestrian-facilities-advisory-committee-public-welcome.html

Often we’ve communicated with other #BikeAdvocates by phone, or online, long before meeting in person. That was the case with Paola Berthoin of Carmel Valley, and it was such a joy to meet her face to face on April 17 at the Fridays #FarmersMarket in Monterey (https://bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tourists/food-for-all).

Paola, an #artist, has biked 20,267 miles, mostly local miles. For Paola, her bike is “a perfect alternative mode of #transportation!”

As long as we’ve known this woman—our precious sister-in-law—she's cherished the natural world. She loves outdoor sports and activities, from exploring tide pools to biking, since she relishes being close to nature! Today she sent us a photo of her newest ride, a trike given to her by some friends who were moving away from her community in Fort Myers, Florida.

As she'd told us earlier (https://bikemonterey.org/voices-of-people-who-bike-part-2-encouragement-and-barriers.html) "Inside the all-ages gated community where we live, a lot of people bicycle, including those who are seniors. Many bike to get around, and many home rentals include a bicycle….The trikes are really popular here, and most have baskets on them for carrying things. Many have cupholders and cell phone holders; they have them all decked out! Many people do put flags on their trikes to be more visible. Often you’ll see people with their dog riding with them too.”
