Honestly great news. You know when Zuckerberg goes "ALL IN" on something it's the tech equivalent of a death rattle.
Personally, I think it’s high time to introduce higher taxation for companies that have started using AI or robots to replace humans in any industry ( not just IT OR office jobs). We could call it an 'AI tax.' The revenue collected should go to people who have lost their jobs to robots. Of course, there would need to be a framework and laws to manage this. We need something like this to preserve the fabric of society and to keep people from falling into poverty, or worse, crime.

Follow up, 2025-12-27: Rudy here confirms the Blacksky appview is still being worked on (eg: blacksky uses bluesky's appview still)

The sticking point, as he describes it, is "backfill". This alludes to the issue that makes me compare ATProto to blockchain: to get the features users expect, every node on the network must mirror the network's entire history. This is impractical, which is why bluesky is as of this moment a federated network with effectively only one node.

Funding for Cash comes from CCI and the Cypherpunk Fellowship ($70K total). I am still working on the app-view. I hit storage limits on the previous server during backfill and needed to buy a $14K OVH Cloud instance.

To spell this out clearly, the reason RAM has quadrupled in price is that a huge quantity of RAM that hasn't been produced yet has been bought with money that doesn't exist to populate GPUs that also haven't been produced to go in datacenters that haven't been built powered by infrastructure that may never exist to meet a demand that doesn't exist at all to make profit margins that mathematically can't exist while economists talk about this thing they call the "rational markets hypothesis".
in japan theres this island called Computer Island where theres hundreds of computers living there, semi-feral computers, but you can pet them because they're fed twice per day

Okay, here's my theory: whoever made that noise made it intentionally, so we would hear it and find him.

Today I am stepping down from my role as the CEO of #Mastodon. Though this has been in the works for a while, I can't say I've fully processed how I feel about it. There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I intend to stay on and continue to advise the new leadership and contribute, because Mastodon—and the fediverse—is one of the very few beacons of hope for a better web.
