Texting with a friend in the Twin Cities and they just went "Have to go, I hear helicopters," which reminds me that now is an excellent time to say fuck ICE and fuck this fascist administration

Another dispatch from the implementing-regular-expressions front lines. Probably of interest to very few, but who knows. Includes thoughts on coding while old.

Repeat after me: Separating username and password fields on separate (fucking responsive) page WILL NOT INCREASE A FUCKING SECURITY IN ANY WAY! IT WILL JUST MAKE THE PASSWORD MANAGERS TO WORK WORSE AND THUS IT WILL FUCKING DECREASE THE SECURITY!!!
Edit: source is Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis.

I use one #bitnami thing. One. I somehow missed their announcement from the end of August that they were mothballing all of their open source stacks. What the actual fuck? Their open source stuff had 4 BILLION downloads in the 12 months leading up to the end of August.

With great sadness we learned yesterday of the peaceful passing of @gkellogg last Saturday.
In the last 14 years, as a W3C Invited Expert, Gregg co-edited 9 standards and a dozen other specs. He also implemented them all and contributed test suites that #w3c groups are still using.
His implication in the JSON-LD Working Group, that he co-chaired, was instrumental to the success of JSON-LD.
For all this, but also his friendliness and good nature, he will be dearly missed.

Sad news: Gregg Kellogg passed away from Coralie Mercier on 2025-09-11 ([email protected] from September 2025)

@pluralistic There’s a good example of enshittification happening now with chess.com and their recent acquisition Chessable. Chessable changed its terms of conditions to put free courses behind a paywall. Much discussion on the chess Reddit with examples from the history of chess.com enshittification, e.g. acquiring competitors, making them shitty, then killing them. Just passing this on in case it’s relevant to your interests.

I am working on an app that has data hierarchies. You can define properties for folders in the hierarchy. The design calls for an option on a folder that means "the settings on this folder will be inherited by all child items and folders of this folder." What is a good name for this option?

This is an experiment. Please boost.

Here's the idea: This post is going first to my followers, then, if they boost it, to other people. This domain has been registered for only this experiment. I should see in my web server's logs when mastodon instances start crawling the site for info. Then maybe also some curious humans.

I just want to play with my monitoring a bit :)
