The Hard Fork podcast is very fun - tons of interesting #AI discussion. Highly, highly recommend.

Large language models feel like the technology for our times;
we can't think of alternatives for late-stage capitalism, we can't think of alternatives for our ailing democracies, our popular culture produces only reboots and sequels. LLMs can't come up with the 'new' either, they only recycle the past.
2023 Trash Art Contest winners announced

Artists from around the UW created astounding art pieces from trash in the fourth annual Trash Art Contest. UW Recycling received 23 submissions from UW students, faculty and staff. Five winning pieces were selected in three categories. The artwork needed to be created from items normally thought of as trash or a written work about waste and sustainability. Artists were asked to express feelings or ideas about waste, or a sustainability topic that relates to waste.

Today we're making RF Diffusion, our guided diffusion model for protein design with potential applications in medicine, vaccines & advanced materials, free to use. The software has proven much faster and more capable than prior protein design tools.

In a new study led by @CaelanRadford in collaboration w @FKlein_lab, we use improved deep mutational scanning system to map neutralizing specificities of broad human polyclonal serum antibodies from individuals living w HIV.

As background, HIV infection sometimes elicits antibodies that broadly neutralize many strains.

Individual neutralizing antibodies extensively characterized, but it is harder to map neutralizing specificity of polyclonal antibody response.

Big fan of this concept, will have to give it a try!

My entry for the UW Trash Art contest: a cross stitched DNA alphabet sampler using pipette tip box inserts. I’m calling it “junk DNA”
I have mountains of emails and messages to respond to from the past few weeks because I've been moving house, but I am just falling more in love with EEVEE instead. Real-time playback of MD simulations with nice lighting & depth of field. #blender3d #GeomtryNodes #MolecularNodes
The UW Recycling office is having a trash art contest and I’m trying to figure out something cool to make using scrap yarn and some of the huge amount of plastic waste we generate in lab. I’m pretty pleased with my first test but a little stumped on a pattern to make. 7x11 pixels is not very much to work with!
