Nothing like new data to lift the spirits. 44 new caspofungin-resistant yEvo genomes! Can't wait to get these back in the hands of the high school students who evolved these yeast strains.
Genome Sciences is looking for a Grants Manager for the Model Organism Genetics labs (which include me!): https://uwhires.admin.washington.edu/ENG/candidates/default.cfm?szCategory=jobprofile&jobhistory=1&szOrderID=242737

New work in Genetics by Renee Geck when she was in my lab, Nick Powell, et al. delving into novel variants in G6PD in the All of Us resource. Functional analysis of G6PD variants associated with low G6PD activity in the All of Us Research Program https://academic.oup.com/genetics/article/228/4/iyae170/7912375
Had a great workshop yesterday with the Hutch SEP & a bunch of local teachers interested in using our Yeast Madness kit in their classes. This module uses strains evolved by previous yEvo high school students and teaches about mutations, fitness, & cell biology. https://www.fredhutch.org/en/education-training/teachers/science-education-partnership/sep-curriculum/yevo-lab.html
Here's the paper, which is still one of my favorites. High-resolution mapping, characterization, and optimization of autonomously replicating sequences in yeast https://genome.cshlp.org/cgi/content/long/23/4/698

Well how nice is this interview with @blake_billmyre about the impact on him of a talk I gave about Ivan Liachko's ARS genomics project! That was a pretty fun conference :) mSphere of Influence: When a sequencer is more than a sequencer | mSphere https://journals.asm.org/doi/full/10.1128/msphere.00433-24
The department surprised me with a very nice "new chair" toast at the retreat and gave me a literal UW camping chair as a gift 🥹
Excited for Dunham/Harris labs graduate student Gabby's selection for the Human Genetics Scholars program from ASHG! https://www.ashg.org/publications-news/press-releases/ashg-announces-2024-2026-human-genetics-scholars/

Long time GEE members may remember that the first E used to stand for Exam, but we've broadened our mandate thanks to some additional interest from members of the Genetics Society of America Education Committee.
