Whether or not your Introduction should include your main result is “the most controversial issue in science”!

OK, it isn’t really, but I enjoyed seeing Dynamic Ecology say so. A couple of weeks ago I argued here that it’s effective, and thus desirable, to end the Introduction of a scientific paper with a brief statement of your main result. But I also admitted that this isn’t universally held opinion; in fact, I’ve always suspected that preferring papers written that…

There are many success stories where ancient farming practices helped civilizations survive changing climates.

Reclaiming ancestral farming techniques can be a step toward sustainable food systems.

What ancient farmers can really teach us about adapting to climate change – and how political power influences success or failure

Agricultural sustainability is as much about power and sovereignty as it is about soil, water and crops.

March has observed a notable trend toward greater precipitation in the subpolar North Atlantic over the last few decades, especially around the Barents Sea where there has been a loss of sea ice.

Climate Viz of the Month

January 2026 Hi all! Sorry for the delay in posting my first blog of the year. I’ve been spending a lot of time updating my visualizations with data through 2025 (and in some cases 2026). This mean…

It's 2024 and we are off to the races with sea surface temperatures (SST) 😢

SST anomaly (deviation from norm) values are still high across most of the world. Of course, El Niño is currently peaking, so SSTs are expected to be above normal.

Comparison with Jan 2023 is not appropriate, but the global SST for the first week of 2024 sets a new record and is higher than the corresponding period of 2016, a very strong El Niño year.

What does it mean for 2024?

Fog + frost = some pretty interesting ice! #icetodon

Piracy websites should adopt Midjourney's arguments on copyright:

"Look bro, it's just too hard to figure out what license governs each and every file and who its author is."

Pretty disappointing that microbiologists and biologists are the same size, generally speaking.
