Hot droughts in the Amazon provide a window to a future hypertropical climate - Nature

Thirty years of forest demographic data, combined with recent ecophysiological measurements, reveal that intense Amazon droughts sharply increase tree mortality once soil moisture falls below a threshold, and that these hot droughts will become more frequent and intense as Earth warms towards hypertropical conditions.

Landscape-level human disturbance results in loss and contraction of mammalian populations in tropical forests

Tropical forests hold most of Earth’s biodiversity and a higher concentration of threatened mammals than other biomes. This study uses a standardized pan-tropical dataset of 239 mammal species from 37 forests across 3 continents to provide evidence of selective extinction occurring within tropical forests triggered by anthropogenic pressure in the broader landscape.

An excellent article on the MIT homepage today about how important seed-dispersing animals (including birds) are to forest carbon absorption. The picture is of a Great Hornbill chowing down on a juicy fig.

Why animals are a critical part of forest carbon absorption

Following deforestation, tropical forests with healthy populations of seed-dispersing animals can absorb up to four times more carbon than similar forests with fewer seed-dispersing animals, according to an MIT study.

Wrote this whole #emacs config because of the increasing presence of pay-to-use workbenches in #research. I find it more complete and flexible than #jupyter or #rstudio. Give it a go!

New article on trait-environment relationships in tropical forests of French Guiana.

Marion Boisseaux has published a new paper from her PhD thesis (part of the METRADICA project). While environment didn't explain much of the trait value variation when traits were considered individually, it had a strong influence on trait syndromes.
