La metodología del proyecto Raíces de Soberanía difiere de un lugar a otro. En los Países Bajos, durante el punto álgido del brote de COVID, la mayoría de las veces consistió en reunirse con los agricultores fuera de sus campos o donde estaban trabajando, compartir una bebida y pasar la hora siguiente discutiendo sus pensamientos e imaginación, antes de ofrecer una mano y ayudar en lo que fuera posible. Todas las entrevistas compartidas en esta plataforma se han compartido con el permiso de los participantes.

The Methodology for the Raíces de Soberanía project differs from place to place. In the Netherlands, during the height of the COVID outbreak, it mostly consisted of meeting farmers outside in their fields or where they were working, sharing a drink and spending the next hour discussing their thoughts and imagination, before offering a hand and helping in whichever way possible. All the interviews shared on this platform have been shared with the permission of the participants.

Durante unos días, el sistema alimentario local se paralizó. La gente entró en pánico y los estantes de las tiendas se vaciaron rápidamente. Los mercados globales de alimentos desaparecieron y los agricultores empezaron a tirar las patatas a la calle para que la gente las comprara, y la gente se mantuvo alejada. Comenzó una crisis y el proyecto Raíces empezó a explorar la imaginación radical del sistema alimentario local en este momento, y hacia dónde nos llevará esta imaginación.

For a few days the local food system came to a halt. People were panic buying and shops shelf’s were emptying fast. Global food markets disappeared and farmers began dumping potatoes on the streets for people to buy, and people kept their distance. A crisis began and the Raíces project began to explore the radical imagination of the local food system at the moment, and were this imagination will take us.

Volvímos a los Países Bajos justo cuando el bloqueo y la crisis de la COVID19 paralizan la vida tal y como la conocíamos. Al comenzar las entrevistas con productores, procesadores y distribuidores, el COVID19 ocupó el centro del escenario. Discutimos cuál fue su impacto en el sistema alimentario, qué hizo que el sistema alimentario fuera vulnerable al COVID19 y si el sistema alimentario creó o permitió la propagación del COVID19.

We return to the Netherlands just as lockdown and the COVID19 crisis brings life as we knew it to a halt. As interviews with producers, processors and distributors began, COVID19 took center stage. We discussed what was its impact on the food system, what made the food system vulnerable to COVID19 and did the food system create or allow for COVID19 to spread?

Así terminamos nuestra primera vuelta por Puerto Rico. Además de los amigos que participaron en el proyecto de foto-voz y las increíbles personas que se tomaron el tiempo de compartir con nosotros. Aixa, Gustavo y Georges se ocuparon de mí en cada paso del camino y realmente no tengo palabras para expresar mi gratitud.
