⚠️ 🇪🇺 Tomorrow, something unprecedented (and IMO completely unhinged) will be happening on the EU's draft CSA Regulation (#ChatControl)
Here's my take on what's happening & what you can do as someone that cares about digital rights:
- The law has been stalled for years because the EU Council (reps of all the member states) cannot agree to a position;
- On the one hand, you have governments like Spain who have admitted that they want to put a stop to encryption;

I think a lot of time when the Torment Nexus thing is brought up, people are getting the arrow of causality the wrong way around. It's not that necessarily that Bobby Techbro read "Don't Create the Torment Nexus" and was inspired to make one, even if that's what the marketing tries to sell it as.
No I think that's not giving scifi authors the proper respect as futurists. They looked at how things were going and thought "man, this might lead to a Torment Nexus" and then wrote a story about that.

The Belgian version of chat control is nothing but mass surveillance. It’s what the Going Dark initiative call “setting the right narrative”. But the consequences are the same. It’s client-side scanning (state spyware in your phone) of European citizens’ private communication.
Chat control is a corrupt proposal pushed forward through undemocratic methods. The Belgian version is no different. The European Council should follow the European Parliament’s lead and reject it
After Snowden’s whistleblowing in 2013, large parts of the internet became encrypted, enabling private and secure communication. Not everyone has welcomed this change. Most notably, the FBI and other U.S. government agencies have fought what is often called the “crypto wars”, the war on encryption. In recent years, they have been joined by the European Commission. Under the slogan “what about the children,” they try to introduce total mass surveillance of all EU citizens — first through the proposed Chat Control legislation, and later via the Going Dark and ProtectEU initiatives. The goal is to legally mandate spy tools on every European smartphone and computer. The forces behind these efforts have turned out to be American tech companies and intelligence agencies.
