I've seen a lot of bad laws in my time at EDRi but this one gets first prize for its complete lack of humanity. It is essential that MEPs reject this law when they vote tomorrow.

If you're reading this over your Sunday morning coffee, there is still *just* time to do something:

Say No to Mass Deportations in Europe

No one should be taken from their home at dawn and put on a deportation flight. We’re building 100,000 voices against mass deportations in Europe. Sign now - and help us get there. Let’s stop this together!

WeMove Europe

⚠️ Tomorrow, the 9th of March, MEPs in the civil liberties committee of the European Parliament are voting on a truly chilling proposal for a new EU mass Deportation Law, aka the "Returns Regulation".

As organisations like Equinox: Racial Justice Initiative, Access Now and others in the ProtectNotSurveil coalition have highlighted, this is a big step towards creating an EU version of ICE, codifying racial profiling and further criminalising solidarity and movement in Europe.

💋 There is only one way to KISS – Keep it Safe and Secure: with strong encryption, ban on spyware, democratic oversight and communities with power. Anything less than that is control & surveillance.

Together with allies, we’re launching this campaign to protect our messages AND devices in digital space.

If you ♥️ encryption & 💔 spyware, check out & support our campaign ➡️ https://edri.org/take-action/our-campaigns/keep-it-safe-and-secure/

Positive update on #ChatControl. The EU's member states are set to officially agree to delete forced mass scanning orders (which could undermine encryption) this week!

This puts the protection of civil liberties in a much better situation for final negotiations with the EU Parliament.

However, it doesn't mean that all the proposal's issues have been solved - we're especially worried about the threat of forcing message apps, email services and app stores to perform risky age verification.

This could be the biggest rollback of digital rights in EU history, pushed through opaque processes that sidestep democratic oversight.

If the EU genuinely wants to help businesses comply, it should support enforcement and provide guidance, not dismantle the frameworks that protect people and provide legal certainty.

📣 Fundamental rights are NOT “red tape": we urge the @EUCommission to defend, not dismantle, the laws that keep people at the centre of Europe’s digital future.

What’s being presented as a “technical streamlining” is, in reality, a covert dismantling of Europe’s strongest digital safeguards.

In its current form, the Digital Omnibus would:
🔴 weaken ePrivacy rules ➡️ more tracking
🔴 undermine the AI Act ➡️ less oversight
🔴 hollow out the GDPR ➡️ companies mark their own homework
🔴 shift power from people ➡️ to tech & state actors

Europe’s digital rights are on the chopping block.

We - 127 CSOs & trade unions - are sounding the alarm over the European Commission’s forthcoming #DigitalOmnibus proposals.

Behind “simplification” lies a deregulation agenda that threatens the EU's digital framework - GDPR, ePrivacy, AI Act, DSA & DMA - the very laws that keep our data safe, hold govts & corporations accountable, prevent AI from determining our life chances, & protect us from mass surveillance.

(2/2) ....it DOESN'T mean that #ChatControl is automatically gone. The Danes still need the other 26 EU Member States to agree on what to replace it with. There are still threats to encryption and digital rights, and we must remain alert.

But it's a strong sign that EU governments increasingly realise they cannot force through the end of private digital communications!

(1/2) Is this the end of #ChatControl ?

Well, not quite, but big news nevertheless!

The Danish govt has told reporters that they plan to drop the Commission's proposed "Detection Orders" (mandates requiring chat and email providers to scan people's private communications, even if it breaks end-to-end encryption), due to a lack of political support.

Having previously been fierce proponents of encryption-breaking mass scanning, this is a big change from Denmark.

However, it DOESN'T mean....
