Those of you who are not web devs (good choice) may not quite appreciate what this means.
You know how websites are loads slower now, and don't work without JavaScript? Well, one of the big (dubious) arguments made in favour of this transition was that you download a bunch more code first, but then it'll make everything faster once you're there. It's front loading.
What @slightlyoff has shown is that this is not relevant, because people don't stay on the sites long enough to get the benefit.

Amazing what icon designers come up with to make AI logos look even _more_ like assholes.

Help spread the word of our browser extension Consent-O-Matic that helps automate answering those ever-present cookie consent pop-ups.

It's developed by researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark and free to use for Chrome/Edge, Firefox and Safari including for iOS.

Also, it's open source, so if you have a bit of technical skill, you can help us improve the rule set for greater coverage.

Consent-O-Matic

- Terrible timetables
- Under utilisation of cross border infrastructure
- Compulsory reservation
- Issues with language regime for train drivers
- Total pain with Interrail
- Sky high prices on international routes
- The biggest headaches with approval of rolling stock
- Under investment in non high speed infra
- Super slow move to ETCS
- Sour relations with neighbouring railways

Pretty much ALL the problems of European rail are problems with FRANCE

LLMs are *absolute concentrated brain poison* for these folks. They try out the LLM to see if it can solve a few simple problems and then they extrapolate to more complex problems. Wrongly. They infer from social cues in their cohort, which are absolutely fucked by the amount of synthetic money (and maybe fraud?) driving a subprime-bubble type mania. They infer from the plausibility of its outputs, which are absolutely fucked because the job of these models is to produce plausible outputs.

If this result holds up, it’s potentially big: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-025-02481-0

In short, it implies that #LightPollution is decreasing the efficiency with which #plants remove carbon from the atmosphere. It concludes that artificial light at night increases “#ecosystem respiration” (plants, microbes, and animals releasing carbon dioxide through their activity and growth), but there is no corresponding increase in #photosynthesis.

The result is that plants exposed to ALAN emit more #carbon than they absorb from the #atmosphere. The authors write: “Our findings show that ALAN disrupts the fundamental energetic constraints on ecosystem metabolism, warranting the inclusion of light pollution in global change and carbon–climate feedback assessments.”

Widespread influence of artificial light at night on ecosystem metabolism - Nature Climate Change

The authors combine light intensity data with eddy covariance observations from 86 sites to show that artificial light at night increases ecosystem respiration and alters carbon exchange, with impacts shaped by diel cycles and seasonal dynamics.

“Install your own apps, or even another operating system. Who are we to tell you how to use your computer?” says Valve on their new Steam Machine website. That’s some radical copy for 2025, right next to “listen to us wherever you get your podcasts”.
Meta's chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, plans to exit and launch his own start-up. He ended up in a position where he has to report to a kid much younger than him. Yann LeCun, who is a scientist, strongly maintains the stance that AI will never be able to reason and plan like humans. He said LLM has its uses, but it is next to impossible to build AGI or even intelligence that can match a baby elephant's intelligence. Good news: AI will achieve human levels of intelligence next year!

Bad news: This will not happen as a result of improvements to AI.
