6 thought provoking questions posed to @awaisaftab (psychiatrist) and myself (brain researcher) and we hit on so much:

The challenge of escaping reductionism. Theories of consciousness. Are mental disorders brain disorders? Why should anyone care about philosophy? Is epistemic iteration is failing? And what bits of brain research are awaiting their Copernican moment?

With nods to @summerfieldlab, @knutson_brain, @tyrell_turing, @Neurograce, @eikofried and so many more.

Read it all here (and let's discuss)!

Hey tweeps!
Are you aware of a evidence that reforms in scientific integrity, responsible scholarship, or #OpenScience have had measurable impact on the quality of science (broadly defined)?
@annaveer & I are looking information for a workshop we're putting together.

Thanks 🖤!

@eikofried You are in a good position to help diversifying the reviewer pool and providing valuable service to the community by suggesting alternative reviewers among qualified experts who are junior scientists or from less known places, especially from LMIC countries and other underrepresented groups of reviewers. This is an important service and good time investment

Received 270 review invites in 2022.

Let's assume I reject all, but do my due diligence.

1. carefully read email & abstract
2. consider request
3. reject x2
4. think & recommend 1 or 2 reviewers
5. write awkward "sorry" email to editor in case it's a friend

That's ~10min each, not counting interrupted workflow, ~45 hours.

Genuinely interested how others deal w this. I don't feel comfortable just deleting review requests, but it's totally gotten out of hand.

What are sustainable solutions?

Welcome to Hotel Elsevier: you can check-out any time you like … not

An intriguing, but mostly worrying, blog by @eikofried on practices from Elsevier. We should be skeptical and critical towards these big publishers.

A journey by Robin Kok and Eiko Fried trying to understand what private data Elsevier collects; what private data Elsevier sells; and what to do about it.

Been struggling for a decade with the browser tab mess in chrome. Tried pinned tabs for a while but they took over until my whole bar was pinned.

Been using tab groups for a while now and it works like a charm.

6/6 Diversity and inclusion:
If you are from a background traditionally underrepresented in science, please do apply if you meet the qualifications! Science is a team sport, and we can't do well in science if we make it so much harder for some folks than others.

Our (ever growing) team is looking forward to your applications :)
