I didn’t come all this way to just roll up when bigots continue to be bigots. They can’t make me invisible or quiet. The person on the right could only imagine the fellow on the left. I was so hopeful when I started my transition. President Obama was in office and to say the vibe was sweeter is an understatement. Still, I wouldn’t trade anything for the past 7 years & my life is infinitely more fulfilling today. #transformationtuesday
Daddy used to hit golf balls into a soybean field. Sometimes I would do it, too & then spend hours finding them and putting them in a bucket to do it all over again. Daddy had a beautiful swing. He was a great athlete with what he called ā€œThe McBride Finesseā€.
I remember how he’d stop, leaving his trunk open and to pull woods & irons from the bag.

7 years ago, I was in unknown territory. I was 52. What if it didn’t work for me? How could it work for me? I’m not that lucky.
So much has changed. The further along down the road I go, the less chained I am to the binary. We smash it. We open it. We disrupt it. We’re special, valid as anyone & with every right to exist. I’m happy to be a particular kind of fellow & lucky to be trans.

When I was a kid, I stuttered. My Uncle Tom stuttered, too. Uncle Tom didn’t want folks making fun of me. He told me to go into the woods and talk to a tree. The tree isn’t expecting anything so there’s no rush.
This is my tree. It let me talk. It was patient, steadfast and helped me heal. I was a kid when I made this painting. I gave myself an aviator hat. I had a crush on Amelia Earhart - still do. I am wearing a magic robe for protection but underneath, all bones and heart.
When I was three, I started wearing Papa’s hat & asked folks to call me Sam.
I always knew I am me. #translivesmatter
