Our community is dedicated to fostering fair and factual political discourse.

Let’s all remember that humans have a tendency to claim absolute truth, based on their limited, subjective experience, as they ignore other people’s limited, subjective experiences, which may be equally true.

"We inherited both a sacred promise and a big mess from those who came before, and we’re still working on both. That fact that it is so very hard, and we have so very far still to go, is strong evidence of the incredible value of that promise. This is evidenced in great part by how fiercely others will fight with all they have to keep us from it."

Independence

Today, a personal essay. When I was little, my Ba would bring out fireworks for the Fourth of July. He acquired them in places like Maryland, where our family would go summer camping on the state beaches, and brought them across state lines to our little suburban enclave in upstate New York. As soon as it was dark enough out, many of our neighbors would gather, the area kids eager to see what Mr. Kuo had in store that year. Sparklers for sure. Sometimes big noisemakers. And always more than a few showstopper rockets with brilliant flourishes of color. He would hand them out to us to dole out to the other children without a thought to liability.

Judge Michael Luttig, a conservative federal judge who advised VP Mike Pence and who testified before the J6 committee has written a scathing rebuke of the GOP defense of Trump.

“The former president’s behavior may have invited charges, but the Republicans’ spineless support for the past two years convinced Mr. Trump of his political immortality.”

Opinion | It’s Not Too Late for the Republican Party

The G.O.P. needs to have the reckoning with Trump that it vainly hoped would never be necessary.

We have come to a place in #USpol where people are protesting that we recognized Juneteenth and the end of slavery in the United States.

I have to believe—because if I don’t it is too sad—that this too will pass. It won’t pass if we sit on the sidelines, however. The US will not move towards a multi-racial, pluralistic democracy without a concerted effort by those committed to realizing that future.

One of my greatest fears from day 1 of the idea of Trump as president was him having access to the most top secret intel of the US. (Many others had this same fear.) Trump is a unique threat to the national security if the country. The many in the GOP who support this dangerous buffoon are despicable.

Of course he wants to be reelected in order to save himself from jail time. Easily predictable and also a threat to the rule of law.

Opinion | How Screwed Is Trump?

The former president faces his most serious legal threat to date, but he is hard at work on his most potent defense — his reelection bid.

Unresolved in-fighting in the House GOP majority means very little action for this week too. A few pieces of legislation are being considered under suspension of the rules (aka considered because they don’t have to pass a rules vote), but they are mostly resolutions like one in support of Evan Gershkovich (a WSJ reporter). Certainly a good thing to do, but there’s no force of law to it. And these might not get votes either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"For much of the nation’s history, an ethno-religious nationalism was dominant, conceptualizing America as a nation of white Christian patriarchal norms – a land where property-owning white Christian men had a right to be at the top and shape society and culture in their image. ...

The central fault line on the Right is not simply between democracy and authoritarianism."

What We Are Fighting Over

How much democracy – and for whom? That is the question defining the current political conflict across the “West.”

Democracy Americana
Everyone needs to get off their asses and start advocating, registering people to vote and VOTE! VOTE VOTE VOTE!

Rationalizing how Congress should be publicly executed. One guy trying to be reasonable (???) and suggest only a couple of dozen need to be shot. Which turns into how all the people that vote for them are the real problem and need to not exist!

Oh yeah. Standing by silently and hoping that reason will win the day is working out just fine, I’d say…
