I've tried not to bring too much baggage with me from COVID Twitter but this NYTimes story is appalling. Not only do they paint those still wearing masks as holdouts, but they somehow couldn't find someone who wears anything in between a handmade cloth mask and an elastomeric P100, giving the impression that the remaining mask wearers are either wearing ineffectual protection or wearing a level of protection that most people were unwilling to adopt even pre-vaccination.

Covid Masking: What It’s Like Now That Many Have Moved On

What it’s like to wear masks for Covid when most others have long since moved on.

The US Catholic bishops talk a lot about the decline in religious commitment and the need for stronger religious values in the public square.

Yet prominent Catholics like Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis engage in political games of incredible cruelty with the lives of migrants — in Abbott's case, right on Christmas Eve.

While the US Catholic bishops remain totally silent….

It's almost as if their words about declining religiosity and moral vaules are just empty, isn't it?

The Inigo Montoya method of greeting people.
Step 1: Polite greeting.
Step 2: Your name.
Step 3: Relevant personal link.
Step 4: Manage Expectations.
Oh, the credulity of media. Of course, Musk made this decision (or Saudi investors made it for him) already. They cover a puppet show as if it were news. Whoever gets the job will just be his puppet.
And: "An unofficial poll that Elon Musk commissioned...." Oh, come on, WaPo. He didn't commission shit. He put up a toy. And the caption describing Jared Kushner as an "adviser" in the White House. How credulous do you think we are, WaPo? Not half as much as you.

No word from Musk on whether he’ll resign. He lost a poll he said he’d abide.

Musk apologized and launched a poll on whether to remain Twitter CEO after a policy outlawing promotion of other social media sites prompted major backlash.

@Floxi they claimed to have removed the information about what client your tweet comes from, but they still include it in the response they send to you. it's just hidden, and badly.
One of the dumbest beliefs of antivaxxers is that doctors are fine killing people as long as they get that sweet grant money. You know how little you get paid from even a huge grant? If they're in it to get wealthy, a couple of billionaires could buy them out with pocket change.

I asked #chatgpt to write me an essay, with citations, about a scientific topic I know very well (bat crawling behaviour). It wrote a bad essay that didn’t really say much, but cited two papers with which I wasn’t familiar, in very good journals. I was freaked out! How did I not know those papers?
Turns out, chatgpt just made them up. The papers don’t exist. That’s a handy thing to know.

Random thought but it occurred to me that the Auschwitz Memorial Twitter account is currently in violation of Twitter's "no Mastodon promotion" policy revealed today, with tonight being the first night of Hanukkah.

Is Elon going to suspend the Auschwitz Memorial *during* Hanukkah?
