If we were really having an actual good faith conversation about how to encourage folks to have kids in this country, it would start with allowing families to exit the hospital debt-free. And then it would continue on to topics like parental leave and child care.
But we're not having a good faith conversation. We're having a tariff-like short-term nonsense idea parade that will amount to absolutely nothing long-term.
A $5,000 "baby bonus" for giving birth, like the Trump admin is reportedly considering, is a scam. It's like a payday loan.
According to 2024 research by KFF, "new mothers are twice as likely to have medical debt as young women who did not recently give birth." Even if you are fortunate enough to have good insurance, you're paying thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. And that assumes no complications. Do you need a C-section? Well pony up, because that'll be extra.
