Dan Golding, Taylor Hardwick, and myself have throughout this year been working on this research project for Creative Australia to map the size and scope of the Australian game music sector. We did a heap of interviews and a big survey, and discovered a heap of stuff about how composers and musicians are working with game developers across Australia.

We've now published a huge report, that you can download and read for free. It's about Australia, but I imagine will be just as interesting/valuable for understanding how these dynamics work globally, too.

Hey Australian #musician and #composer folk who work in #gamedev at least occasionally. Myself and @dangolding are running a big survey for The Australia Council for the Arts where we're trying to track the extent of game music work in the Australian #gameindustry. Please help us out by adding your views to the dataset!!

Please share with any folk you know who fit the bill but might not see this. There's a few passes to High Score conference up for grabs for your time!

Australian Music and Games Benchmark 2023

A survey of musicians to determine the extent to which the music and digital game sectors are collaborating in Australia.

Spotify: 25000 people listened to your album, we’ll never tell you who they are and how they found you! Here’s $1.74.

Bandcamp: 30 people bought your album and left a comment! Here’s $250.

1. The Fabelmans - John Williams

Yes, it’s the shortest score here and likely the shortest ever collaboration between JW and SS, but it’s incredibly thoughtful, is probably the cleverest score here, the most emotionally well-judged, and coincidentally also the most effortlessly musical. I’m biased to Williams and though he’ll get a nostalgic, lifetime achievement vote, I don’t think he’ll win - but I’d be thrilled if he did.

2. Everything Everywhere - Son Lux

Incredible amount of craft and versatility in this soundtrack, which makes the most of its collaborations and the fact that it’s the first score nominated to be credited to a band. Creative, perfectly unhinged, naive and knowing. Would be very happy if this won.

3. Banshees of Inisheerin - Carter Burwell

This is a clever score, amplifying the fairytale aspects of the story and giving the viewer cues about what type pf story we’re seeing well before we see it. As usual, Burwell does great work with subtle drama and pushes against cliche. I can never *quite* get on his wavelength though.

4. Babylon - Justin Hurwitz

I liked the film a lot more than most and I don’t see the modern, jazz-esque music as a sin against historical accuracy. It works well in the movie, but the repetition is undeniably annoying outside the film, and again, largely content to just amplify what we’re seeing. A few temp track rewrites that don’t make a lot of sense. It could win simply because it has life and energy.

Ranking this year’s Best Original Score nominees:

5. All Quiet on the Western Front - Volker Bertelmann

From the sound design blurring into music school, which many hate but I don’t mind. There’s artistry here and a few moments of real cut through. But ultimately the music is content to simply amplify what’s on screen and tells us nothing more.

I caught a long, sloooow train the other week, just to try and travel in a low-carbon way. I saved about 120kg of CO2! And all it cost was... almost my sanity? There's a lesson in that, and I wrote about it for the newsletter here:

What trying to travel low carbon tells us about emissions in games

I spent January interstate, visiting friends, on a sort of open-ended trip, no firm return date. When it came time to plan my trip back from Melbourne to Sydney I wanted to see what it was like to do the climate-friendly thing and avoid flying home. I also wanted to
