Via Alertwildfire.org: They're back: Endangered California condors hanging out at a camera-equipped telecom tower on Blue Mountain, 30 miles northeast of downtown Bakersfield. If you look closely, there are eight in this image just before sunrise this a.m. A story we did on this condor group last year: https://www.kqed.org/news/11956021/critically-endangered-but-not-shy-camera-spots-bunch-of-condors-just-hanging-out

State Sen. Appropriations Cmte approves #SB1031, by Sens. Wiener and Wahab, which would pave the way for tax measure to support Bay Area #transit & other transportation. Amendments require Metropolitan Transportation Commission to develop spending plans subject to approval by county transportation authorities.

A second amendment exempts "northern counties"—not specified in committee—from a vote on the regional tax measure until at least 2028. Presumably, that's to avoid a conflict with a North Bay vote to extend the SMART sales tax. Amended #SB1031 may be published tonight/early tomorrow.

Full Senate must act on bill by the end of next week.

One key difference between Brightline West’s project and California High Speed Rail’s slow-moving efforts in the Central Valley is that much of Brightline’s route will run down the center median of Interstate 15.

That choice dramatically simplifies acquiring property for the project, in contrast with CAHSR, which has spent years purchasing the roughly 2,300 individual properties it needs to complete the Merced-Bakersfield line. As of last December, it still needed to buy 37 parcels to complete its acquisitions for that phase of the project.

What's tragic is that most of the the problems and policies posing a mortal threat to our salmon populations have been known for many decades. Our collective failure to respond effectively is unconscionable. Via

California’s Commercial Salmon Season Is Closed Again This Year | KQED

Fishery managers announced a closure of the state’s commercial salmon fishing season for the second year in a row due to low fish populations.

Some of the imperatives embedded in Sweden's OG #VisionZero, adopted as national policy in 1997.

In light of last weekend's West Portal tragedy, the final point is especially compelling: "Whenever someone is killed or seriously injured, necessary steps must be taken to avoid a similar event."

'We need to be laser-focused on what aspects of the measure will truly meet our transportation goals, advance economic prosperity as well as climate and equity. ... Highway expansion is not one of those goals and undermines all of them.'

The latest in a series of polls trying to gauge voter willingness to pass a major regional transportation tax measure in 2026 suggests widespread enthusiasm for a wide array of transit improvements — but shows overall support falling well below the threshold needed for approval.

Message from @nwsreno: 'Not the time to gamble with your family's lives.'

Two questions:

1. When *is* a good time to gamble with your family's lives?

2. Do public agencies feel they need to adopt more extreme messaging when that's the norm on social media? (In other words, is it not enough any more to say "travel will be extremely dangerous"?)
