You say you love your dog, but do you buy it fresh cut deli meat?

To say our Fall courses had really high absence rates compared to the Before Times is probably an understatement.

Today a colleague mentioned that he queried his students (mostly undergraduates in their first two years of study) about what was going on with them that made it hard to get to class.

In the past, we were hearing a lot about jobs changing work schedules, car troubles, etc. Now? Almost entirely feelings of anxiety and depression. Ooof.

A sympathetic nod of the head to everyone who is not posting end of year summaries because they’re broken and sad.

I needed to read this today. My New Years revolution is to live life vibrantly, like a benevolent alien.

I think it might help. 🧡

The most important part of Raskin & Bass’s 1964 Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer is Yukon Cornelius’s gloriously random dog team.

For the holiday, a thread on how to befriend crows.

--

Befriending crows is a wonderful thing.

I have many crow friends at home and at work. They bring joy at unexpected moments and can rescue a miserable day even without shaking down the dust of snow that Robert Frost described.

This thread is an updated version of one I posted at the bird site in July 2019.

Me and #covid are going steady.

If Mastodon diehards want this to be The Next Place after Twitter, the move is to bend over backwards to listen to disabled and Black community about what they do and don't need in social media space.

Even if it's challenging.

Even if it makes you uncomfortable.

These are power user communities, whether folks like it or not.

I like the idea that everyone here is responsible for making Mastodon as accessible as possible for disabled users.
I wish everyone could get into that same spirit about making Mastodon as welcoming as possible for Black people, instead of telling them to find another instance or make their own.

So, on November 18th I succumbed to peer pressure and went unmasked at a smallish indoor event where I was the featured speaker. It’s taken until today, 21 days later, to test negative for COVID again.

Based on my history, I was 80% certain I would have a rough ride if I ever got COVID, and, well, I did. Paxlovid and 5 vaccines kept me out of the hospital. I’m still not “well”, but hope to recover with a bit more time.
