So, on November 18th I succumbed to peer pressure and went unmasked at a smallish indoor event where I was the featured speaker. It’s taken until today, 21 days later, to test negative for COVID again.

Based on my history, I was 80% certain I would have a rough ride if I ever got COVID, and, well, I did. Paxlovid and 5 vaccines kept me out of the hospital. I’m still not “well”, but hope to recover with a bit more time.

@dalcantonJD uuugh. so sorry to hear this! I'm glad you are doing better, but boo on the virus being a jerk to you :-(
@dalcantonJD Sorry to hear and hope that you continue to recover!
@dalcantonJD I'm so sorry! I got it on European travel, heavily masked but opted to eat indoors. That's probably what got me. What's your take on the testing? I've read so many informed opinions on whether testing negative is meaningful relative to infection after contraction. I can't figure it out.
@glennf The testing was very useful for me, since it allowed my household to adapt to the needed degree of quarantining. I took it as a measure of how much virus I would be expelling on exhale, and thus how carefully we had to manage exposure. It also confirmed I was rebounding rather than dealing with something different.
@dalcantonJD That’s great insight, thank you, and best of luck on continued recovery!
@dalcantonJD Good luck, I hope your symptoms are easing. If you don't mind answering (feel free not to), am I reading your tests correctly, that you had the reported "Paxlovid rebound" effect?
@dalcantonJD I know, right? It is difficult to be one of the few people walking to a restaurant,for example, and wearing a mask. But I am doing it.

@dalcantonJD

May I add to the other expressions of both sadness to hear this happened and of recovery wishes. But also thanks for relating this - it's a helpful reminder to beware of situations like this and their potential to be harmful. May your full recovery be soon.

@dalcantonJD
Oh, geeze, that could be me. Three mask-off dining indoors events this week. You're so right about the peer pressure. Hope you make a full recovery.
@dalcantonJD I’m so sorry! 😞 I’m really glad that you are on the mend, and I hope you will be back to full health soon. I hope you can take some time to take things easy and recover, it seems that for a lot of people the exhaustion and some symptoms linger for weeks (long Covid cases aside).
@dalcantonJD thanks you for sharing this. The majority of people around me are not being cautious and in my area there has been a large number of new Covid infections.
@dalcantonJD Oh no! Everyone I talk to keeps downplaying COVID... 😩
@dalcantonJD Very glad to know that you’re recovering and have hopefully gotten through this rough ride.
