Currently still on zeroes.ca but who knows how long that will last

I spend most of my time making things so I don't go nuts from isolating to avoid illness

I was raised by my Reform convert grandparents in the GTA, where we attended a synagogue run out of an office space next to a paint store. I grew up being the Token Jew™ and somehow as an adult that has not changed very much

I have incredibly fond memories of the Virtual Shabbat CD-ROM (https://jewishjournal.com/old_stories/1880/)

Because I'm still not over it, behold the finished skeins! The white ones are undyed co-op wool and the variegated ones are commercially-dyed LYS wool. Preparation and process were as follows, from left to right:

  • Co-op "waste" fibre left over after combing. Drum carded, spun short draw from the end of the batt like sliver (semi-worsted), two-ply.
  • LYS "waste" fibre left over after combing. Drum carded, spun long draw from the end of the batt like sliver (semi-woolen), chain-ply.
  • Co-op "nice" fibre. Hand combed and dizzed once at 3 mm, spun short draw (worsted), two-ply.
  • LYS "nice" fibre. Hand combed and drum carded, spun long draw from the end of the batt like sliver (semi-woolen), chain-ply.

The "waste" co-op wool is a joy to spin despite all the VM. The "nice" LYS fibre is just as much of a fight to spin as the "waste" LYS fibre. The "nice" co-op wool is of course wonderful to work with and makes a very pretty yarn that I'm very pleased with.

I hate "you accept your risks, and I'll accept mine" about covid so fucking much, especially when it comes to masking and air quality and shit, because brodog IDK how to tell you this but you being shitty means that there's not a lot I can do in my risk assessment that lets me participate. I just want to play cards and not have my brain get melted about it. Fuck my liiiiiiiiife.
A lot of the same people who say "you don't look Jewish" are the same people who are mad about Israel existing. Do you want us to look Israeli or not??? If it doesn't exist, where does your argument go???? Up your ass, where it belongs?????

I'm feeling scrappy tonight, so a final (maybe) thought:

I don't like the concept of "statehood" at all but if we have to operate within the framework of current geopolitical nonsense then of course Israel deserves to exist. I don't think any state deserves to exist because statehood is ephemeral and the current system is bullshit but if we must engage with the nonsense then let's fucking go.

The colonialism argument doesn't stand. I live in Canada and we have an extremely aggressive brand of colonialism. How could I compare it to anything else?

I just don't understand the arguments, I guess. The "antizionist" arguments about statehood and Bibi and the Israeli government. You can not support a government but still support a country and its people. The Right To Exist™.

I recently watched a documentary which featured an Israeli Jew who stood watch while Palestinian Muslims harvested their olive trees. I don't like the IDF (or any military. Ever.) but I like him. Them™. The people. Us.

If you want a good show with a (Reform! Observant Reform, no less!) Jewish lead (and if you can handle medical gore; there is a lot) then definitely watch The Pitt. But do not engage with the fandom at all! Antisemitism abounds. Do not talk to the goyim who like the show (they are the majority, as ever) because you will become Tired and Angry and will Block Them All (my Tumblr blocklist has grown exponentially  ). And there are so many of them that they are like the Hydra in that they are Infinite™

But the show is unparalleled aside from all that

The difference between the cheap wool from the local wool growers co-op and the cheap wool from the bougie LYS is bonkers. I'll still get fibre from the bougie LYS when that one family friend inevitably gets me a gift card again, but the local wool growers co-op has such high-quality stuff and I'd always rather support local farmers than whatever the fuck is going on at the stupid fancy yarn store.

The difference is astronomical and the co-op wool is infinitely better in every possible way. The staple length is so much longer (at least twice if not three times longer; this is not difficult because the LYS fibre is maybe 2 cm at best). It's softer and probably has a lower micron count. It isn't full of neps and noils. It doesn't feel vaguely squeaky and dry.

The co-op wool is undyed and has some VM but the LYS is selling what is very obviously felting fibre as spinning fibre. Either way, I have to (get to!) comb and/or card it myself, and I know what gives me a nice experience every time 🐑

I knew it was coming but it still hurts #NewPipe #NewPipeApp
