Here is my #introduction (a few days late) w/hashtags: I'm a #journalist, #author and staff #writer w/National Geographic who covers #science, #climatechange and the #environment——mostly #forests and #prairies and #oceans and #deserts and the #Arctic an #Antarctica and #mountains and, well, anything not inside a human-built thing.

My favorite story (if I had to choose one): The time I traveled, in 2019, to Cape Horn w/a team of scientists to find the southernmost #tree on Earth.

Trump is apparently complaining that all the stories blaming him for GOP election losses are garbage journalism, even though most are quoting people he supported.

Reminds me of one of my favorite anecdotes, shared w/me by a #journalism colleague after a troll complained repeatedly about one of my #writing projects:

"It's pretty simple, really. The only thing he hates are the stories that quote him—and the stories that don't."

Welcome all you journalists covering the climate beat!

Assuming the term “Musk to tusk” has yet to be coined, I’d like for that to be my first (and only) contribution to the migration discourse. #introduction #noxp

Journalist friends, today is a good day to think about your #digitalSecurity.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has a 'Digital Safety Kit' with some excellent tips: https://cpj.org/2019/07/digital-safety-kit-journalists/

Digital Safety Kit - Committee to Protect Journalists

Journalists should protect themselves and their sources by keeping up-to-date on the latest digital security news and threats such as hacking, phishing, and surveillance. Journalists should think about the information they are responsible for and what could happen if it falls into the wrong hands, and take measures to defend their accounts, devices, communications, and…

And then at dawn, this:

Three years ago this month I glimpsed one of the most amazing wonders I've ever witnessed while #onassignment for #NationalGeographic: Thousands of Olive ridley sea turtles washing up on a beach in Costa Rica at night, preparing to lay their eggs.

Oh to be there right now. #journalism

Political media is broken

On October 19, 2022, the New York Times — America's "paper of record" — ran a story with the headline, "Democrats’ Feared Red October Has Arrived." The purpose of the story was to explain why the Democrats will lose badly in the midterm election, which was still nearly three weeks away.
