NEW RESEARCH: Not only are LED lamps highly energy efficient they also cut environmental impacts by 44-61% compared to T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps.

IEA 4E SSL Annex finds LED retrofit lamps cut environmental impact by 44 to 61% compared to T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps - 4E Energy Efficient End-use Equipment

Preliminary findings from the IEA 4E SSL Annex show that environmental impact for T5 lamps can be reduced by 44% and for T8 lamps by 61% if they are replaced by LED retrofit tubes. These are LED “plug-and-play” retrofit tubes that can be installed directly into existing fluorescent fixtures. As the 147 countries who are […]

Remarkable debate in Dutch politics, between social-democrat-green @F__Timmermans and NSC's @PieterOmtzigt. One gets 7 minutes for an opening statement (now on climate), then the other gets 3-4 minutes to respond. An actual... debate.
[The live debate has ended, but worth viewing on YouTube]

Dutch power consumption in the first half of 2023 was the lowest in 20 years.
By the way, this includes the consumption by self-producers.

Interesting to see that the stable growth of Dutch electricity demand has stopped some 20 years ago. Any explanation?

A couple of years ago, I virtually bought an electrolyser and base-load power.

I use this (virtual) electrolyser only when the day ahead power price is so low that green hydrogen is cheaper than blue or grey hydrogen at marginal costs.
If not, I sell the power to the power market.

This year, so far, the percentage of hours using the electrolyser is around 11%; an increase by 25% compared to last year.

The current market share of solar & wind is about 40%; it will increase to 85% in 2030.

In 2000 the Daily Mail reported that the internet "may just be a passing fad".

They also wrote:

🚗"EVs are a waste of space."

🌬️"Wind farms are fine for making the odd cup of tea."

🏠"Half of all homes are unsuitable for heat pumps."

Make of that what you will.

The world will eventually run out of fossil fuels, so our choice is really between stopping their use on our own terms now or being forced to find alternatives in the future while having a terrible climate, tens of millions of deaths from air pollution and climate disasters, higher sea level, etc.

Not a 🚆 revolution but still very good news: direct train from Amsterdam to Copenhagen from December 2025.

Current trip is >10 hrs and involves min 2 changes.

This is an improvement. Now let’s work to reduce the duration, and have a high frequency and low price 🇩🇰 🇩🇪 🇳🇱

New direct train connection between Amsterdam and Copenhagen as of 2025

For those who would like to arrive faster in Copenhagen to see the breathtaking architecture or eat delicious cinnamon buns, can look forward to the new rail connection of the Danish Railways (DSB). That's because DSB is planning a direct train between Amsterdam and Copenhagen in 2026. This schedule will begin in mid-December 2025, Treinreiziger.nl reports.

People sometimes ask me how I can remain optimistic that we can address the climate crisis.

This is why: 👇

20 years ago I worked on my first study on energy.

We assessed environmental damage costs of lignite, the dirtiest form of electricity generation.

Back then I visited an open-pit lignite mine in North Rhine-Westphalia. The scale of environmental destruction is mind-boggling.

We found that in 2004 lignite in Germany caused negative environmental and social externalities of up to €34 billion per year.
