20 years ago I worked on my first study on energy.

We assessed environmental damage costs of lignite, the dirtiest form of electricity generation.

Back then I visited an open-pit lignite mine in North Rhine-Westphalia. The scale of environmental destruction is mind-boggling.

We found that in 2004 lignite in Germany caused negative environmental and social externalities of up to €34 billion per year.

@janrosenow

Stripping the surface of the Earth from its thin layer of biosphere, to scoop up carbon-rich rock from underneath and burn it, releasing said carbon to the atmosphere. At a grandiose scale. What could possibly go wrong.

And like Eunice Newton Foote and Svante Arrhenius didn't know already in the XIX century.
