There is a legend that people took everything valuable, livestock and hid in the Terebovlya castle from the Tatars. There were several (unsuccessful) attacks, after which the Tatars decided to besiege the castle. At night, the defenders tied various rags to the horns of the oxen, smeared them with oil, set them on fire and released them to the Tatar camp. Frightened cattle ran down, set fire to the enemy camp and trampled the invaders. The defenders of the castle killed those who remained alive.

The Tatars again approached Terebovli in1675.They expected an easy victory.But commandant Khrzhanovsky courageously defended the castle.The commandant's wife,Sophia,supported the fighting spirit in the soldiers,she herself took part in battles with a saber.She carried two knives with her and threatened her husband that she would kill him with one,and herself with the other, if Jan decided to surrender the castle.The Turks lifted the siege,and songs,poems and a monument were dedicated to Sofia.
