I have a mild cerebral event every time I hear somebody describe AI as "inevitable". The companies building it don't believe in it, the executives who are purchasing it don't understand it, the developers who are tasked with implementing it despise it, and the average worker needs to be forced at gunpoint to use it. It's probably the least "inevitable" technological advancement the planet has ever seen

Picard management tip: The truth is that sometimes you just won't know the right thing to do. You still have to try.
I have very mixed feelings about the direction affinity is heading, but at least it is a slap towards adobe, for now.
I'm still using the affinity v1 programms, I wanted to updated to v2 this winter, oh well 🙃
The new free Affinity by Canva is the classic too good to be true offer to get the biggest possible user base before they start squeezing them. There is no economic incentive for them to keep developing it in the long term. You don’t pay anything now, but expect the tool you use to gradually become bad and never belong to you. With the previous model, at least, you knew what was the deal. Here, there is only the certainty that soon things are going to become worse.

Dark shapes on a light background? The light will eat them and they shrink. Light shapes on a dark background: they appear bigger.

Darkmode at Den Haag Centraal. Same display. Same fontsize (I think) better results. Good for people with reduced vision. Good for everyone, really. (2/2)

Tagespresse-Recherche: Das große Geschäft mit Tierschutzkalendern an Volksschulen

Ein Verlag, der mit Tierschutz wirbt, verkauft seinen Kalender an Volksschulen in Ostösterreich. Beim Tierschutz davon landet wenig.

Science Must Decentralize

Knowledge production doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Every great scientific breakthrough is built on prior work, and an ongoing exchange with peers in the field. That’s why we need to address the threat of major publishers and platforms having an improper influence on how scientific knowledge is accessed—or outright suppressed. Infrastructure we rely on must be built in the open and on interoperable standards, and hostile to corporate (or governmental) takeovers. Universities and the science community are well situated to lead this fight.
