Six years ago I begged journalists to "stop being loudspeakers for liars" -- and I have to admit that my entreaties fell on deaf ears.

Last week's lie-filled "press conference" at Trump's home was a powerful demonstration of why they should at least try. But they've made it clear that they will never even acknowledge this fundamental flaw in what they do, much less do anything to repair the ongoing damage.

Dear Journalists, Stop Being Loudspeakers for Liars

Please examine what you’re doing. You are letting liars use your traditional norms — which made sense in different times and situations — to turn you into amplifiers of deceit. You know you are doing…

Every time #KamalaHarris says “We’re not going back,” I think of the many ways in which that is true for me. One of them: I’m not going back to private, commercial social media. Just as healthy democracies disperse the powers of the state, healthy social media avoids excessive concentration. I will make this point to the #Harris campaign when I get their attention for Mastodon for Harris. Let’s keep showing them they should be participating in this community. https://secure.actblue.com/donate/mastodon-for-harris

#Fascism "works" in that it expands outwards and consumes. But it doesn't create, it only destroys. Social bonds, community peace, govt integrity... all the way up to genocide.

It is essentially parasitism on civilization.

It always leaves in its wake the seeds of its own downfall, in myriad ways large and small. This aids us in our job: hold it in check and defeat it.

IMO, Enshittification (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification) is not just a term which applies to “online platforms” but to all of tech in 2024. If you go and find a talk where @pluralistic describes the concept and just ask yourself how does this apply to tech X, you will find a way. Not because the idea is generalizable but because it is a really great explanation for why companies do what they do, repeatedly. It concisely describes a repeating pattern you can see in everything tech companies touch

Bad news: I forgot to put the recycling bins out this week.

Good news: It is perfectly legal to hand out empty bottles and cans to trick or treaters.

The human body never ceases to amaze me.
