Six years ago I begged journalists to "stop being loudspeakers for liars" -- and I have to admit that my entreaties fell on deaf ears.

Last week's lie-filled "press conference" at Trump's home was a powerful demonstration of why they should at least try. But they've made it clear that they will never even acknowledge this fundamental flaw in what they do, much less do anything to repair the ongoing damage.

Dear Journalists, Stop Being Loudspeakers for Liars

Please examine what you’re doing. You are letting liars use your traditional norms — which made sense in different times and situations — to turn you into amplifiers of deceit. You know you are doing…

@dangillmor The solution is simple. Just stop lending them our eyes and ears. Corporate media no longer has anything useful to say.

@dangillmor
They're so obsessed with their prime directive of appearing unbiased, that they routinely act as a de-facto mouthpiece for fascist propaganda without any fact checking.

Ultimately this reveals they're more concerned about protecting ad revenue and avoiding attacks from the right than informing the public or maintaining any semblance of journalistic integrity.

@dangillmor I don’t think we can count on them anymore. They sold their souls a long time ago. I guess we have to counter the BS on our own?
@Stone1glo @dangillmor Here in Europe not all seems lost. For example The Guardian calls #climatecrisis (as tag) what it is : Climate Crisis. And they are not afraid to call Trump a liar. Regarding the USA I think it is good to remind people that Fox News is not a news channel, it is a propaganda company for GOP.

@Stone1glo @dangillmor

that's why we have social media!

so want to do a regular, 'pirate' radio station in portland. i do not have the means. come on. tech-heads, let's do this!

radio signals are unregulated up to 100 watts, so long as they do not interfere with an established radio signal.

@dangillmor

True, journalists shouldn't use the Nuremberg Defence of "just following orders", but it's the corporate owners of the media who are giving those orders.

@blogdiva

@dangillmor
As long as the most money can be made off false controversy, our for profit, corporate media is going push bullshit.
@dangillmor Restore the Fair and Balanced doctrine (yet another way Reagan fucked this nation!)

it. is. how. they. make. a. living. gotta pay for those two month of the kids going to summer camp somehow. the press isn't some vaunted public good, it sells, and has always sold, advertising space. if it bleeds it leads. and in the era of consolidation, and fox news ascension they're remit was clear, get the eyeballs, worry about the democracy later ... after we've cashed out and hid behind our gated communities
