MIL gave us some tomatoes she got from a friend's garden. They're bizarre. Black/green when ripe, heart shaped fruit, and they taste like kiwi fruit! But the best thing about them? The name. Indigo Rebel Starfighter V16.

#HomeGrown #EatYourColors #Tomatoes

@SallyMonster I need some seeds!
@sassdawe these are the closest I found when searching. https://portlandseedhouse.com/product/rebel-starfighter-vt16/
Rebel Starfighter VT16

Introducing the green counterpart to the remarkable Rebel Starfighter Prime—a striking green tomato with a beautiful striped exterior and anthocyanin-colored shoulders. This variety typically features heart-shaped fruit, though you might encounter the occasional unique shape. Originally bred by Russ Crowe, who noted, “This ugly little duckling has certainly come a long way over the years. … Continue reading "Rebel Starfighter VT16"

@SallyMonster

Fried.. Green..

they're excellent. suspend your disbelief just once.

@felis_catus_domesticus ooh that's a great idea.

@SallyMonster

mwhahaha you have no idea until you have made them.

I have no idea who first thought of this, but it was brilliant.

the kiwi taste might throw the taste dynamic, though. Classical fried green tomatoes depend on the sour tartness of the green tomato to work their magic.

@felis_catus_domesticus hmm yeah, that might not be quite the same then. These tomatoes are bright and citrussy but super sweet.
@SallyMonster I've never heard of that type. Maybe fried is not the best fate for them. Maybe put them in a salad instead. Funny we live in the same neck of the woods. I'm on the coast. I've got several types growing in the yard right now too, but I have never heard of that type you MIL gave you. Any idea where the seeds came from? I've got black Krims and Cherokee purples growing, among other things. They taste great with that white costco cheddar. Salty mixed with heirloom tomato taste. My heirlooms are sweet-ish but not remarkably so.
@felis_catus_domesticus I don't know, but if you search the name rebel starfighter V16 a few seed vendors show up.

@SallyMonster

sheesh.. that name..

tomato growers have some odd humor.

@SallyMonster @felis_catus_domesticus Next season....

Bookmarked!

Ours are comparatively boring and not yet ripe, and our rain water barrels are running low, and we are no longer allowed to use tap and ground water to water in gardens.
Maybe I'll grow opuntias next year instead.

@drchaos @SallyMonster

another San Diegan?

@felis_catus_domesticus @SallyMonster No, even Central Europe has been under pretty dry and hot conditions, and we are finally getting the idea that water might not be available as much as we are used to.

No, opuntias are not native and they might not fare well with our winters, I was mainly trying to think of drought resistant with edible fruit....

Edit to add: and hopefully slugs won't touch them.... one problem is, we have the wrong pollinators.

@drchaos @SallyMonster

oh, outside of citrus trees, I don't do

things that have spikes.

@SallyMonster Oh, hey, those look amazing!

@SallyMonster

👶: But Mom, I don't like vegetables !

👩: At least eat your Indigo Rebel Starfighter V16 !

@SallyMonster I've grown black tomatoes in both large and small ("cherry") sizes. Quite tasty.
