I've seen a lot of mediocre street photography in my life.
However, the photographs by Fan Ho rank alongside the very best I've seen. Fan Ho had an incredible eye, and I'm very, very envious.
I was born in the early 70s, so have vague memories of it - probably enough though to trigger my subconsciousness. When I see photos like this, I feel a deep nostalgic envy.
There’s something about the wild carefree attitude of it. Pre-AIDS, pre-global warming. Smoking, drinking, sun-burn. The fashions shouted: “I don’t give a shit”. And the music was magnificent.
It must be the relentless constraint and worry of the past few years which are being put into stark contrast against it.
