The ecological crisis is ultimately about the regime of production: who controls it, with what objectives, what is being produced, how resources and energy are used, what technologies are deployed, how yields are distributed. That is the necessary terrain of struggle.

Excited that our paper on measuring stability in systems without static equilibria is finally out!: https://doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.4328

Applies a mix of EDM & state space modelling to separate observation error, process noise, & deterministic variability in timeseries. The EDM backbone can be fit to very complex timeseries with little or no a priori information about underlying processes. The result is akin to a "detrended" coefficient of variation (CV), after accounting for deterministic variability. 1/2

For the holiday, a thread on how to befriend crows.

--

Befriending crows is a wonderful thing.

I have many crow friends at home and at work. They bring joy at unexpected moments and can rescue a miserable day even without shaking down the dust of snow that Robert Frost described.

This thread is an updated version of one I posted at the bird site in July 2019.

It nevertheless is inspiring how this debate is becoming ever more important, and how many knowledge fields and traditions are being incorporated and acknowledged in it

A great summary of what is needed to design and implement realistic #degrowth policies. A key issue is that of scale: how to synchronize efforts from local communities, governments, and international bodies? what will be the incentives? social pressure alone will likely won't be enough?

Furthermore, I still miss more detailed roadmaps for economic transitions, quantifying transformation of different sectors, work reallocation, trade relationships, etc.

Degrowth can work — here’s how science can help

Wealthy countries can create prosperity while using less materials and energy if they abandon economic growth as an objective.

Mi favorito es una mezcla de lluvia, truenos y chimenea. Ya que no puedo tener mi cabaña en el lago, por lo menos tengo un sucedáneo.

As an ant biologist, I think the discovery of “ant milk” might be the single biggest research finding during my lifetime.

Across ants, maturing pupae make a nutritional exudate for their nestmates:

Pupating ants make milk — and scientists only just noticed

A nutritious fluid secreted by pupating ants helps to feed the rest of the colony, and could play a part in the evolution of social structures.
