It’s wild that we let so much of this become parking craters and dead space.

“It’s easy to fall into the trap of trumpeting the length of that new bike infrastructure, with not enough attention to quality. But smart cities also know that QUALITY of bike-lanes is just as important as quantity.” Read my #FastCompany bike-lane article.

And paint isn’t infrastructure.

If only experienced cyclists feel safe in a bike lane, then is it a bike lane at all?

Thinking about bike infrastructure as usable by cyclists of all ages and abilities changes how you design a city. In Vancouver, the city is trying to shift as quickly as possible to these “AAA” bike lanes.

In 2024, Paris will ban non-essential vehicle thru-traffic from its city center. The plan is expected to cut around half of daily car journeys thru the core. Residents, public transit, emergency vehicles, & people with disabilities will find it EASIER to move. Via @citylab

The French capital will ban non-essential traffic passing through the city in time for the Olympics.

▶️To avert catastrophic climate change & limit warming to 1.5°C we need to reduce carbon emissions from transport drastically.

▶️In fact transport is the problem child of emissions. In many countries transport emissions are rising while all other emissions are falling👇

Sometimes, banning cars is a lot like banning indoor smoking. Much controversy and then, with hindsight, it's hard to believe how we could ever accept it.

@TheWarOnCars Our 14 year old daughter uses the family e-bike to commute to weekend babysitting jobs. Without it, I think she’d ask for car drop off and pickup, which takes 2x the time for someone with a license. E-bikes are a great step towards transportation independence.

Survey of bus riders by Transit Forward Philadelphia paints a clear picture of where the attention of transit agencies and advocates should be placed: https://assets.nationbuilder.com/transitforwardphilly/pages/116/attachments/original/1671574925/Executive_Summary_of_TFP_Bus_Rider_Survey.pdf?1671574925

Will this be the bonus episode that gets us suspended from Twitter? Perhaps deep down we want it to be.

Saw @qag refer to Seattle’s neighborhood street fund as the “hunger games” because it pits neighborhoods against each other for scarce resources. I feel this way about CA’s Active Transportation program (ATP) funds. It’s so competitive a city can score in the 85th percentile and not qualify. Many smaller cities don’t bother, because they’ve got to hire a consultant to write a competitive grant application and they stil might not qualify. Yet highway funds are never lacking.
had the excellent fortune of eating breakfast at Nick's Cafe this morning & sitting next to a couple metro bus drivers. got the low down on driving a bus in LA - which I think should be one of the highest paid jobs in the city because of the stress of driving a large object in LA traffic, taking fares, & dealing with all types of customers. they said there are way more 'thank you' customers than problem riders, and that after awhile driving a bus feels 2nd nature.
