So, #introduction. I'm Paul Voosen, the earth and planetary science reporter at Science magazine. I cover #climate, #NASA, #geoscience, Mars rocks, foram tales, gyres, ridges, slabs, clouds. And mostly, I'm here to listen in. So I'm going to try and convince as many geoscientists to join us here as possible.
@jeffjarvis It would be helpful if AI engines provided footnotes/attributions for their “work”. I asked ChatGPT to compare the Russia and Texas GDPs. (Morning Joe keeps saying Texas GDP is larger.) Chat says not so fast. Russia is bigger. Neither Joe nor Chat provide the sources of their information.

André NattaJust because we don't get information a certain way doesn't mean everything's completely broken. It means things are shifting + we have to determine where journalism (as a profession) fits into the scene unfolding.
There's acknowledging the role journalism adopted in the info infrastructure 100+ years ago has changed in addition to the places where the exchange of this info has taken place (parks, churches, central gathering spots in all of their forms).

@Starlight The telltale sign of @journalism failure for me is the number of so-called credentialed @journalists that almost always fail to identify their sources of information when they publish. Instead, they credit "my unnamed sources tell me". It's much harder work and skill to get information disclosed by source name and on the record. Lazy "journalismi" is bad journalism. Do the work.
