I tested several Mastodon clients on iOS and have a favorite: Mona! 🎉

@MonaApp
❤️ Customizability, thread view, "unread toots" counter, super snappy, pricing
🥹 no Markdown

@elk
❤️ Open Source, interface, thread/boosted view, Markdown incl. code highlighting
🥹 forgets last position in timeline, reload not working

@ivory
❤️ Snappy!
🥹 no thread view, pricing, feels over-designed

@icecubesapp
❤️ Open Source, Markdown
🥹 no thread view, sluggish

@mariohamann Thank you. I didn’t know Mastodon supports Markdown. Guess I have some extra work to do.
@MonaApp AFAIK only some clients support it – it's just some kind of "view interpretation". Would love to see you supporting it! 😍
@MonaApp @mariohamann I think possibly only some servers support Markdown as well, though I have not personally tested this.
@mariohamann @MonaApp @elk @ivory @icecubesapp ice cubes is doing a far better job of highlighting the images with alt text than my previous apps as well.

@mariohamann @MonaApp @elk @ivory @[email protected] Elk is my favorite. But yeah, loses place on reload. Can't zoom images. Test input box buttons are overwritten by the keyboard.

It's buggy.

But it's FAST!

@ParanoidFactoid @MonaApp @elk @ivory @icecubesapp It is!

I forgot to mention that it lacks notifications on iOS, being a deal breaker for me. :(

@mariohamann @MonaApp @elk @ivory @[email protected] I'm running it on Droid. Notifications work here. IMO, even with the bugs, Elk is the best choice on Droid. I also like that it's a web client, so I don't have to use a privacy invading app.
@ParanoidFactoid @MonaApp @elk @ivory @icecubesapp Yah, the problem is less Elk (the team does a fantastic job!) but Apple's missing support for PWA notifications. Unfortunately that will never change, as long as there isn't some kind of native wrapper for Elk on iOS.

@mariohamann Interesting summary. Thanks. I mostly agree! Regarding @ivory though, the design aspect is one of the things I love. Everything feels well thought out and consistent. The icons are great, and the app focuses on the things I really want to do. I very much agree however that threading could be better. I get quite lost when reading threaded replies, and would also be nice to see some threading in the main timeline. @MonaApp really nails this.

@paulpap @ivory @MonaApp Maybe "over-designed" was too harsh, "too opinionated" sounds better – and unfortunately Ivory's opinion doesn't fit mine (especially the icons drive me crazy). 😊

BUT: Glad that you like it! It's just amazing that there are so many apps for different tastes and needs now. IMO this will change the experience & the acceptance of Mastodon a lot.

(Meanwhile I found lots of new settings in Mona – so much to personalize. 😍)

App Store

@conan Yah, the official client was my first contact with Mastodon.

❤️ Does it's job, free.
🥹 Not my taste, everything too big/spacy/grey-ish, no personalizations possible, no threads...

@mariohamann I use Toot! - would be interested to hear your take on that client vs. the others you've tested!
@conrad Didn't enjoy Toots' screenshots in the app store (thread view kinda logical, but way too crowded; only text buttons?) and therefore didn't want to spend the money on it. :)
